James Halliday – Opaque purple-red. Amazing colour. Dense, ripe black fruit, a faint sauvage note and spice. Concentrated and controlled with a web of green apple acidity and fine tannin. Whatever oak it has seen, it has just sucked it up. Big, fresh, maybe brutal, but so well done. Amazing durif.
About This Wine
Grown on our Hard Hill Road vineyard in Great Western, these Durif grapes were carefully fermented in small tanks and barrels where, apart from a daily hand-plunge, they received very little intervention.
After about three weeks on skins, the wine was gently pressed before being aged in 500L American puncheons for 18 months.
Warm, generous and aromatic. Cassis, blueberries, anise, violets and rose petals; with elegant tannins providing a remarkably long and lively finish.
Already showing a wonderfully gregarious personality, this Durif will evolve and gain further complexity and elegance over decades in the cellar.
