World Wine – "No one but no one delivers more quality for the price than Goisot." Allen Meadows (Burghound)

Robert Parker/Wine Advocate – This has a refined bouquet that is subtle at first, with honeysuckle and wild mint notes that appear to blossom with aeration. The palate is well balanced with a slightly fishy entry, fresh and vibrant. Harmonious and not a blowsy Aligoté, the terroir comes through on the finish with limestone and chalky notes that lend a slight but pleasant austerity. As I said before, I suspect this will repay those that give this 2-3 years in bottle.

Aligoté, a white grape variety native to Burgundy, France, often finds itself playing second fiddle to the more renowned Chardonnay in its home region. However, what this grape might lack in fame, it more than makes up for in character. With its high acidity and light body, wines produced from Aligoté grapes typically exhibit a lively freshness, making them perfect for warm weather sipping or as a base in the classic Kir cocktail. The wines often carry pronounced mineral and floral notes, intertwined with hints of green apple, lemon, and pear. Traditionally cultivated in the cooler climates of Burgundy, Aligoté has found new homes in various wine regions across the globe, from Russia to the United States, showcasing its adaptability and the intriguing nuances it can bring to different terroirs. With a rich history and a bright future, Aligoté continues to captivate wine enthusiasts and novices alike.
Aligoté wine is derived from the white grape variety of the same name, which finds its origins in the Burgundy region of France. Often overshadowed by its more famous counterpart, Chardonnay, Aligoté has made a name for itself due to its distinctive freshness, high acidity, and crisp taste profile. This wine offers a pale gold hue with vibrant aromatics of green apples, lemons, and a subtle minerality. The palate is brisk and lively, often exuding flavors that resonate with the aromas, punctuated by its hallmark acidity that gives the wine its refreshing quality.
While Aligoté is indigenous to Burgundy, France, it's not limited to this region alone. Burgundy remains the premier region, with vineyards in Bouzeron producing particularly esteemed versions. However, the grape has found a home in other parts of the world such as Russia, Moldova, and parts of Eastern Europe where the climate and terroir allow the grape to express itself uniquely. Each region contributes its own distinct character, but Burgundy, with its mineral-rich soils and temperate climate, often sets the benchmark.
The most popular Aligoté wines often come from the Burgundy sub-region of Bouzeron, which is the only village appellation exclusively for Aligoté. Wines from here, such as Domaine A. & P. de Villaine, have gained significant recognition. Additionally, older vines tend to produce Aligoté with greater depth and complexity, and as such, bottles labeled "vieilles vignes" (old vines) are sought after for their enhanced richness.
Given that Aligoté is less celebrated than other Burgundian whites, it often delivers remarkable value. Wines from lesser-known appellations or from regions outside Burgundy can offer tremendous quality at a fraction of the price of more illustrious white Burgundies. Producers in Eastern Europe, for example, are creating noteworthy Aligoté wines that are both affordable and expressive.
Aligoté's high acidity and zest make it an ideal wine for pairing with a variety of foods. It beautifully complements seafood dishes, especially oysters, shrimp, and light fish preparations. Its crispness can also cut through richer foods like creamy cheeses or buttery sauces. Aligoté is traditionally used in the Burgundian cocktail "Kir," where it's mixed with blackcurrant liqueur, offering a delightful aperitif that pairs seamlessly with light appetizers and charcuterie.
