About This Wine

The rosé from Pittnauer is a blend of two native red varieties, Blaufränkisch and Zweigelt. Aside from being fun to say, these varieties are bursting with blue and red fruit and the rosé is smacking with strawberries and blueberries along with hints of spice with the aim to enjoy this outdoors with plenty of friends. Best recommendation is to have a few in the fridge, just in case.

The Pittnauer story is a perfect adage of turning lemons into lemonade when in the 1980s Gerhard Pittnauer took over the family business when his father unexpectedly passed away and the teenager was thrust into what would have been a daunting role. To add to this, the Austrian wine industry was reeling from the ‘antifreeze scandal’ that occurred at the time. Rather than wallow in pity, Gerhard, now joined by his wife Brigitte, utilised their exceptional patch of prime Burgenland vines to produce what they call ‘living wines’ utilising biodynamic techniques and doing their best to let the land speak for itself.

The winery today has several labels and incorporates all the native varieties of the region, Blaufränkisch, Grüner Veltliner, Zweigelt and St Laurent as well as less native varieties like Merlot and Chardonnay. Today, the Pittnauer family produce world leading wines that are a shining light for Austria and their region.

About Austrian Wine

Austria is a country with over 4000 years of wine making history, however, it unfortunately doesn't seem to enjoy the status and popularity that the high quality of it's wines deserve. Decades later, the country is still feeling the effects of a scandal in 1985 that destroyed its credibility at the time.

Grüner Veltliner is the most important wine made in Austria, distinguished by its lightly fruity, noticeable spice and characteristic white pepper notes. This variety comprises roughly a third of all plantings. In terms of volume, Riesling plays a much smaller role than in Germany, but is responsible for some of the most appreciated dry white wines made in the country.

In red varietals, Austrian native varieties are dominant and include the tart and peppery Zweigelt, spicy and dense Blaufränkisch and juicy Saint Laurent.
