World Wine – Sam Kim (Wine Orbit)
About This Wine
Sourced from two vineyards that were planted with one on black and the other on red soils of the famed Coonawarra. All the fruit was picked during the early morning to retain colour and flavour retention and then crushed and fermented for a period of up to 10 days. Following primary fermentation the wine was pressed off into a small parcel of new but mostly into older oak for malolactic fermentation and maturation where it was held for a period of 10 months prior to blending and bottling.
2019 Vintage: All in all vintage 2019 was excellent in the Coonawarra region. Prior to picking red grapes showed an even ripening throughout April ensuring good balance and concentration as well as bright fruit intensity. Cabernet from this vinatge was deep and rich with varietal definition and good tannins.
Tasting Note: Appears bright crimson red with deep purple hues. Showing a lifted perfumed nose of blackcurrant and mulberry fruit and followed by a chocolate oak and subtle spice character. The palate shows dark berry fruit flavours upfront with hints of nutmeg as well as subtle herb and red florals in the finish. Supple varietal tannins give classical framework and weight to the wine which finishes with integrated fruit and oak driving a long finish. Perfect with lamb shanks.

Coonawarra Wine
The Coonawarra wine region is most known for its Cabernet Sauvignon that is produced on red “terra rossa” soil. This clay soil is one of the most notable in the “New World” of wine covering an area of only 15kmx2km. The terra rossa soil also overlies soft, penetrable limestone and it is this uncommon combination that makes this region so special.
“Cabernet Sauvignon is the most widely planted variety in the world and Coonawarra is one of the few regions where free draining soils and maritime ripening conditions achieve the ultimate varietal expression.” Coonawarra.org
From Coonawarra Cabernet you can expect a medium bodied red with powerful yet polished tannins, luscious dark berry fruit, herb and mint flavours as well as satisfying length.
While half of region’s production is Cabernet, the limestone soils also suit planting of Chardonnay, Riesling and Sauvignon blanc.
