James Halliday – "From the 1.7ha Block 31, the highest section of the 1946 bush vines. 50% whole berries, wild yeast open-fermented; matured in a foudre and ceramic eggs for 11 months. Truly great wines add something new on each taste; here, there’s an ethereal, otherworldly purity to the lingering finish and aftertaste." - 99 points, James Halliday (The Weekend Australian)
About This Wine
One of the best examples of Grenache in the world.
High Sands Grenache is the pinnacle of Yangarra's estate. Reaching deep within the sandy soil, their prized 1946 old vines produce wines that balance intense power and complexity with fragrance and beauty.
Sourced exclusively from our special Block 31 (1.7 Ha). At 210m elevation, this is the highest section of the 1946 planted bush vine Grenache, which also has the deepest sandy soil. Extremely low yields. Hand-picked on the 23rd of March, being a flower day on the biodynamic astrological calendar. Mechanically sorted. Destemmed, 50% whole berries and remaining crushed. Cold soak. Open fermenters with a long gentle maceration for a minimum of 21 days. Wild yeast ferment. No pressings are used in this wine. Matured on lees in older large Format French oak and sandstone egg for 11 months.
