About This Wine

Niepoort Charme is a red wine coupage made mainly with Tinta Roriz and Touriga Franca and other varieties from the DOC Douro made by Niepoort.

Niepoort is a winery that has been making Port wines since 1842. It is run by the Niepoort family who have worked with Noriega to make their wines for many years. Since the very beginning, they have worked to unite tradition with modernity. They use traditional Portuguese techniques such as grape treading, fermentation in cement deposits and aging in pipes, 550-litre port aging barrels, whilst also using new technologies that allow them to take the best care of the grapes. The winery has vines in different locations, some of which are more than 100 years old, and they have an aging room, Serpa Pinta, in the town of Vila Nova de Gaia.

The Niepoort Charme vineyards are very old and are located in the Mendiz Valley, on the banks of the Pinhão River. The soils are shale-based and the strains are between 70 and more than 100 years old. The vines are trained using the Double Guyot and Cordon de Royat systems. They are harvested manually.

In the winery, the Niepoort Charme vintage passes over the selection table and then the entire cluster is gently squeezed. They are placed in stone presses and tread to extract colour and compounds both in pre-fermentation maceration and during fermentation. Fermentation begins in the presses and continues in barrels. Finally, the wine is aged for 15 to 19 months in French oak barrels.

Niepoort Charme is an elegant and balanced wine made in stone presses.

Portuguese Wine

Portugal as a wine producing country is sometimes unfortunately overshadowed by its European neighbours, however, it has a long wine making history and the region’s popularity is growing as people start to take notice of its quality and unique character.

The country has a large array of native grape varietals which are used to produce an abundant variety of different wines. Nevertheless, the two most popular wines styles exported are from Vinho Verde and the Douro regions.

Douro is the home of Port wine, and the city of Oporto where the wine gets its name. It is one of the major rivers in Portugal, and with fertile soils around its banks, increased attention has also been given to the Douro region’s non fortified wine production in recent years. Full bodied and concentrated dry reds made from grape varieties such as Touriga Nacional, Spanish Tempranillo, Touriga Franca, Tinta Barroca and Tinto Cão are all worth a try.

Vinho Verde in the north of Portugal is responsible for producing effervescent, lively, and refreshing white wine that is increasingly becoming Portugal’s most famous. Perfect when served chilled on a hot day, it is known for zingy lime flavours, a sharp minerality and subtle grassiness. The wine is often a blend but will usually be predominantly based on Alvarinho grapes which gives it its unique character.
