About This Wine
Grand H is the abbreviation for Grand Cru Hengst in Wintzenheim. This is not written out in full because Pinot Noir is still not an approved Grand Cru grape variety in Alsace and only applies to white grape varieties in this site. The south-facing site is characterised by marl, limestone and sandstone. The vines are more than 40 years old. The proportion of whole grapes used is mostly 20 %. The same applies to the proportion of new barriques.
Color
intense, slightly transparent cherry red
Nose
That the Grand H and the Clos de Faille not far from each other, i.e. on similar ground, is quickly noticeable in the fragrance; because here, too, one notices in the 2021 Grand H a clear reduction in the form of smoky notes. But here, too, air ensures that this quickly integrates. Beyond that, the wine appears deep and complex with a beautiful blend of dark, juicy fruit of wild berries and black cherries combined with an impression of Danube wave, dark chocolate and cool rock.
Palate
On the palate, the wine seems hedonistic in the best sense and fully lives up to its claim of being from a Grand Cru site. This is a great Pinot with densely woven, juicy, ripe fruit. It is a Pinot that simultaneously provides a lot of pull on the palate and whose acidity describes a wide arc. In addition to the finest wood, one finds hints of dark, slightly warmed chocolate. Towards the finish, the wine gains more and more power, depth, length and elega
