Robert Parker/Wine Advocate – The higher-altitude vineyards like some of the ones used for the 2017 El Velado resisted the spring frost of the year better, and despite being riper, the wine has managed to keep its poise and balance. This comes from a plot at 600 meters altitude planted 80+ years ago. Like the rest, it fermented in open 3,000-liter oak vats with indigenous yeasts and matured in barriques and foudres for some 15 months. They have kept the Burgundian bottle here because there is more Garnacha. This is a little more straightforward, with less complexity compared with the other single-vineyard bottlings, a lactic touch and a chalky tannins. 1,524 bottles were filled in May 2019.

Nestled in the northern parts of Spain, the Rioja region is bathed by the Ebro River, creating an idyllic setting for vine cultivation. This area is characterized by its diverse climates, from the cooler zones in Rioja Alavesa to the warmer parts in Rioja Baja. Such diversity gives rise to a plethora of wine styles that reflect the varied terrains and microclimates. The region's history is as rich as its wines, with winemaking traditions that trace back to the Roman times. Tempranillo is the star grape here, often blended with Garnacha, Graciano, and Mazuelo to produce wines of incredible depth and character. Rioja's commitment to quality is evident in its classification system, which distinguishes wines based on their aging period, adding another layer to the wine lover's exploration of this remarkable region.
Rioja is a wine region located in the northern part of Spain, nestled between the Sierra de Cantabria mountains and the River Ebro. This enchanting region stretches across parts of the provinces of La Rioja, Alava, and Navarre. The River Ebro runs through the heart of this territory, bringing with it vital minerals and irrigation for the flourishing vineyards. Its unique topography, with the combination of high plateaus and deep valleys, creates distinct microclimates that are conducive to viticulture.
Rioja wines are renowned globally for their quality and depth of character. Synonymous with Spain's winemaking heritage, wines from Rioja offer a spectrum of flavors, from fresh and fruity to deep and complex. Their meticulous aging process in oak barrels, often beyond the stipulated requirement, lends them a distinct profile. While Rioja houses some of the world's most expensive and coveted wines, there is an abundance of excellent mid-range and budget-friendly options. This affordability, combined with outstanding quality, has made Rioja wines a favorite among wine enthusiasts and novices alike.
The allure of Rioja transcends its picturesque landscapes; it lies in its rich history, its dedication to traditional winemaking practices, and its adaptability to modern techniques. Rioja was the first Spanish region to be awarded the coveted Denominación de Origen Calificada (DOCa) status, marking it as a region of exceptional quality. Its unique terroir, characterized by a blend of Atlantic and Mediterranean climates and a range of soil types, contributes to the distinctiveness of Rioja wines. Moreover, the local winemakers’ commitment to maintaining the region's winemaking legacy, while embracing innovation, adds layers of depth to the wines.
While Rioja produces both red and white wines, it is most celebrated for its reds, primarily those made from the Tempranillo grape. These reds are categorized based on their aging process into Joven, Crianza, Reserva, and Gran Reserva. Each category offers a distinct taste profile, with the wines becoming more complex and nuanced with extended aging. Tempranillo provides the wines with flavors of berries, plum, and tobacco, and the oak aging imparts notes of vanilla and spice.
Determining the "best" wines is subjective and varies based on individual preferences. However, some consistently acclaimed producers in Rioja include Marqués de Riscal, La Rioja Alta, and López de Heredia. Their offerings, like the Gran Reserva 904 from La Rioja Alta or the Tondonia Reserva from López de Heredia, have garnered international praise. These wines, among others from the region, are lauded for their depth, complexity, and ability to age gracefully, making them a prized addition to any wine collection.
