Stefano Lubiana Sasso Pinot Noir 2012
100% estate- grown, single-vineyard. Sasso is a selection from the very best barrels and is only made in exceptional vintages.
This is a wine ready for serious contemplation: it will open up beautifully in the glass. The heady nose is intoxicating with its ripe cherry spice, bright raspberry and a mix of delicious savoury flavours that tantalise the palate. The final journey of this outstanding wine’s structure is one of long, silky tannins – the perfect finale.
The Wine Front – Deeply flavoured and tannic and yet pretty and perfumed. Plum and cherry, dried Italian herbs, wood spice and anise. It's an immensely pleasant wine, even though the content is serious. It's a wine of light and shade, drama and detail. As well as it performs now, it's impossible to drink it without yearning to see what its future holds.
James Halliday – Sasso is the estate's top Pinot Noir, a barrel selection released in the best vintages, and it is complex. This has depth and structure, but such a joyous wine smelling of Pontefract liquorice, rich and riper flavours, but all balanced, fuller-bodied, deep, velvety round tannins, sapid with some tangy acidity, twang and perfume from whole bunches, earthy sous bois, hint of menthol, so much going on. Layers of flavour, texture and depth. A wine that demands time and respect.
