TWR Single Vineyard 5182 Pinot Gris 2016
Single-site Pinot Gris. 5182 is the vineyard number given by BioGro New Zealand following the organic certification of the original vineyard. Anna and Jason Flowerday are passionate about aromatic varieties and particularly those from Alsace so it was only a matter of time until they took on the challenge of Pinot Gris. They replanted a section of the old block at TWR with the Berry-Smith clone (also known as Larkham clone) of Pinot Gris. They chose this particular clone for its low cropping, small bunches and small berries as they felt it would deliver the best quality fruit. The TWR Pinot Gris is Certified Organic.
The Wine Front – Pinot gris from one of Marlborough’s best and most exciting producers. Also known as SV 5182. Only 465 dozen. Dry. Mouthfeel, richness, spice and length. Excellent pinot gris. Leaves no stone unturned. Heady style in a positive way. Attacks with flavour but maintains the show through a lengthy finish.Highly textural. It’s not oily or indeed overtly oak-influenced but it slides seductively through the mouth, pulp and skins and juice all having a bearing, or seemingly so. It’s alive with fruit perfume on the nose; active with spice on the finish. There’s a steeliness. A smokiness. A crunch of apple. It has a wealth of flavours and scents and yet it maintains a subtlety. It gets better as it rests in the glass too.
James Suckling – An extremely polished style that has effortless flowing shape, plenty of citrus, apple and pear fruit aromas and flavors and a subtle savory twist through the finish. Drink now. Screw cap. 92 points. Nick Stock, jamessuckling.com November 2017
