Decanter – “A late ripening year with an 'Aszú miracle' appearing from mid-September onwards, giving beautifully concentrated Aszú berries with intense botrytis but also great acidity. It’s still a real baby, showing creamy vanilla aromas with ripe pear, acacia and peach. It’s luscious and silky with lovely purity and superb intensity of quince and honey, and fine acids to give balance. A very lingering finish.” - Caroline Gilby MW, Decanter

Robert Parker/Wine Advocate – “Tasted at the Disznóko vertical in London, the 2013 Tokaji Aszu 5 Puttonyos is an (Aszú) blend of 75% Furmint, 15% Zéta and 10% Hárslevelu that was picked between September 23 and November 11 over four passages through the vineyard. It has an elegant, laid-back, almost Sauternes-like bouquet, nicely defined if not quite as complex as other vintages. The palate is crisp and fresh, a dash of stem of ginger on the entry, creamy in texture with the Azsu character more dominant here than on the nose. There is a lovely touch of mandarin and orange rind that comes through with aeration and enhances this young Tokaji that is full of potential.” - Neal Martin, Wine Advocate

Wine Enthusiast – “This golden-colored Tokaji has aromas of raw honey, apricot blossom, pear and baked apple tart. Silky smooth upon entry, it offers flavors of baked apples, wildflower honey, canned pears and apricot. The acidity is nicely balanced so as not to be too cloyingly sweet.” - Jeff Jenssen, Wine Enthusiast

Dessert wines, Sherry, and Port are rich, fortified wines known for their intense flavors and sweetness, making them ideal for consumption at the end of a meal. Dessert wines can be crafted from a variety of grapes that are often left on the vine to overripen, resulting in a higher sugar content. Sherry, originating from the Jerez region of Spain, is produced in various styles ranging from dry to sweet, using a unique aging process that involves a layer of yeast called flor. Port wine, hailing from the Douro Valley in Portugal, is typically richer and sweeter, often enjoyed with cheeses or chocolate-based desserts. These wines are not just beverages but are traditional expressions of their regions, crafted with age-old methods that enhance their complex flavor profiles and aromatic intensity.
Dessert, Sherry, and Port wines are a category of fortified and sweet wines designed for sipping after a meal or with dessert. Dessert wines encompass a range of sweet wines, often made from grapes that are allowed to ripen longer on the vine to develop higher sugar levels. Some dessert wines are also produced by stopping fermentation early, which leaves residual sugars in the wine, or by using grapes affected by noble rot, which concentrates their sugars. Sherry is a fortified wine from the Jerez region of southern Spain, known for its distinctive production involving a solera system where wines of different ages are blended over many years. Sherries can range widely in style from very dry (Fino, Manzanilla) to richly sweet (Pedro Ximénez, Cream). Port is a fortified wine from the Douro Valley in Portugal, typically sweeter and richer, often enjoyed as a digestif. Port wine is made by adding grape spirit to halt fermentation and preserve some residual sugar, which gives Port its characteristic sweetness and robustness.
The best regions for producing these wines are renowned globally: Port wine is exclusively from the Douro Valley in northern Portugal, a region with steep terraced vineyards along the Douro River, ideal for the cultivation of Port wine grapes. Sherry is produced in the Jerez region in Andalusia, Spain. The unique climatic conditions of this region, characterized by hot summers and mild winters, contribute to the distinctive qualities of Sherry wines. Dessert wines come from various regions, including Sauternes in France, where the moist conditions favor the development of noble rot; the Tokaji region in Hungary, known for its Tokaji Aszú; and the Mosel region in Germany, famous for its late-harvest Rieslings.
Among the most celebrated: Château d'Yquem from Sauternes, famous for its complexity and longevity. Graham's Vintage Port, known for its rich, robust texture and immense depth of flavor. Gonzalez Byass’s Tio Pepe, a very popular dry Sherry with crisp and almond-like flavors. Sandeman’s Fine Rich Madeira, a popular choice for those enjoying the caramelized flavors of Madeira wine.
For value, consider: Dow's Late Bottled Vintage Port, which offers the richness of a traditional vintage Port at a fraction of the price. Lustau “Solera Reserva” Dry Amontillado Sherry, providing excellent quality for its price and a true taste of classic Sherry. Blandy's Duke of Clarence Rich Madeira, another excellent example of quality Madeira accessible at a reasonable price. These wines demonstrate that enjoying fine fortified and dessert wines doesn't always require a high investment, making them more accessible for casual enjoyment or special occasions.
