Originating from Tuscany's sun-drenched vineyards, Chianti boasts a rich tradition that dates back centuries. Nestled amidst rolling hills and historic towns, the vineyards benefit from a unique combination of soil and climate, fostering the growth of the region's signature Sangiovese grape. This grape, the soul of Chianti, imparts vibrant cherry notes, subtle hints of herbs, and a characteristic finish that is both tannic and harmonious. Historically, the region was the battleground for trade wars and territorial disputes, but today, it's celebrated as a beacon of winemaking prowess. Wine enthusiasts and critics alike laud Chianti for its ability to beautifully age, developing complex aromas and flavors over time. As you pour a glass, let its ruby-red hue and intricate layers tell the tale of Tuscany's timeless legacy.
Winemakers produce Chianti in the vineyards around Florence, Siena, Pisa and neighbouring cities. The most popular Chianti wines come from the Chianti Classico region, where the style was created, but several other regions are also over-performers. Chianti from the Classico region is easy to spot, as the labels display a black rooster, the appellation’s official emblem. And although the prominent squat bottle in a straw basket used to be the norm in Chianti a few decades ago, the wine is now bottled in Bordeaux-style bottles. Don’t be surprised if you don’t find Chianti in its traditional “fiasco” bottle anymore.
There’s more than one Chianti. Regular Chianti is a lovely everyday wine, Chianti Superiore is a bit more concentrated, and Chianti Riserva is age-worthy. Chianti Classico Gran Selezione is the best of the best, as it ages for at least 30 months, and it’s made with the appellation’s finest grapes. We can classify Chianti for its origin or for its time spent in oak. Although most Chianti on the market is on the inexpensive side, the best of the best can be pricey. Chianti is made with at least 70% Sangiovese, and the rest can be made of Canaiolo, Colorino, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot or Syrah.
The most expensive Chianti, often labelled as Chianti Classico Riserva or Gran Selezione, can be costly, but it’s of the same quality as the finest red wines in the world. Of course, there’s a lot of accessible Chianti, and it’s also alluring. Aged wine is not necessarily better than a young one; it is only more complex. Young, fruity Chianti will always have a place on the table, especially for its vibrant fruit aromas and tangy acidity. Chianti is a synonym for Tuscan wine, and although world-famous, it is still wine to enjoy at the table any day of the week.
