Nuits Saint Georges, nestled in the renowned Burgundy wine region of France, boasts a rich history of viticulture and wine production. The vineyards stretch across rolling hills, benefiting from a unique blend of limestone soils and a favorable climate, which together produce wines of remarkable character and complexity. This region, although primarily known for its exceptional reds, showcases Pinot Noir's true potential, expressing deep flavors and aromatic profiles. From bright cherry notes to earthy undertones, each bottle tells a story of its terroir, tradition, and meticulous craftsmanship. As seasons change and years pass, Nuits Saint Georges continues to stand as a testament to Burgundy's timeless art of winemaking, capturing the essence of the land and the passion of its people in every glass.
Nuits Saint Georges is a red wine appellation located in the Côte de Nuits sub-region of Burgundy, France, and it’s part of the ‘golden hill’ or Côte d’Or. The wine is made from Pinot Noir grapes and is known for its intriguing perfume redolent of black cherries, brown spices and undergrowth. The appellation covers an area of 320 hectares and produces around 1.5 million bottles of wine per year. Nuits-Saint-Georges is a communal appellation or ‘village’ appellation, and producers can label their wines as such as long as the fruit comes from the commune’s vineyards. There are also prestigious plots that have gained the distinction of Premier Cru. To this day, Nuits-Saint-Georges doesn’t have Grand Cru vineyards, but the commune’s quality is still astoundingly high.
Popular Nuits Saint Georges producers include Domaine Faiveley, Domaine Jean Tardy et Fils, Maison Louis Jadot and Jean-Jacques Confuron. These wines are coveted by collectors worldwide for their exceptional quality, typicity and age-worthiness. However, these producers make wine at all quality levels, so they’re not all expensive.
There are two main types of Nuits-Saint-Georges wine: red and white. The red wine is made from Pinot Noir grapes and is known for its rich, complex flavours and aromas of dark fruit, earth and spice over a silky palate. The white wine is made from Chardonnay grapes and is known for its crisp acidity and citrus and stone fruit flavours. Sadly, only 3% of the village’s vineyards are planted with Chardonnay, so its white wine is rare. Wines labelled Nuits-Saint-Georges are worthy of any cellar, but the commune’s 41 Premier Crus are on another level. Some of the most popular include Les Saint-Georges itself.
The best Nuits-Saint-Georges wines come from the village’s Premier Cru vineyards, but the wines at a commune level are also fantastic. Although all wines are made with Pinot Noir, they’re not all the same, as every producer has its own techniques to express the village’s terroir. Any bottle from Nuits Saint Georges is worth trying. There was a time when Nuits Saint Georges was named Nuits before it adopted the name of its most famous vineyard, the Saint Georges. Thanks to the region’s winemakers and grape growers, the town is now one of the best sources of Pinot in the world and a key Burgundian sub-region. Try Nuits-Saint-Georges wines and discover one of the purest expressions of Pinot Noir.
