E. Guigal Condrieu Viognier 2017-White Wine-World Wine
E. Guigal Condrieu Viognier 2017

Wine Spectator – Peach and apricot-pie character that's very showy and very much within the sweet-pastry spectrum. There's also some spicy appeal to complement notes of cumquat rind. Pithy and focused. The palate has an exotic, tropical thread of mangoes, peaches and cantaloupe melon. Very hedonistic and regal — full of fat and very convincing viognier. A great vintage. Drink young whilst exuberant!

Wine Spectator – This is delightful, with the exotic apricot, nectarine and quince flavors typical of Condrieu but energized by ripples of honeysuckle, verbena and minerality throughout. Reveals an echo of bitter orange through the finish. Drink now through 2022.

Condrieu is a fascinating wine region nestled within the northern part of the Rhône Valley in France. Its history traces back centuries, with the area gaining recognition for its unique grape variety: Viognier. The steep terraced vineyards along the western bank of the river provide an ideal setting for the grapes to flourish, producing wines characterized by their deep golden hue and aromatic profile. Notes of apricot, peach, and floral undertones are predominant, making these wines instantly recognizable. The combination of the region's granitic soils and meticulous winemaking techniques results in wines that are both expressive and nuanced. The full-bodied nature of Condrieu wines, coupled with their vibrant acidity, ensures that they remain favorites among enthusiasts who appreciate wines with complexity and depth. Whether enjoyed young or aged, Condrieu wines consistently deliver a memorable tasting experience.
Condrieu is a picturesque wine region situated in the northernmost part of the Rhône Valley in southeastern France. It spans a narrow stretch along the western bank of the Rhône River, nestled between the towns of Vienne to the north and Valence to the south. The region's steep, terraced vineyards overlooking the river are a testament to the dedication and passion of the local vignerons. Due to its specific location and unique geography, Condrieu boasts a microclimate that is particularly conducive to viticulture, offering a harmonious blend of sunlight and cool breezes, making it a distinguished and sought-after wine-producing area.
Wines from Condrieu are renowned for their exceptional quality and distinct aromatic profile. Primarily made from the Viognier grape, they carry a reputation for being full-bodied, with expressive notes of apricot, peach, and floral undertones. As for affordability, wines from Condrieu can be on the higher end of the price spectrum due to the region's limited production capacity and the meticulous care that goes into each bottle. However, while some of the top-tier wines can fetch a premium price, there are still many options available that offer great value, balancing both quality and cost.
Condrieu stands out as a wine region due to its unique combination of geography, climate, and history. The region's granitic soils contribute to the mineral undertones often detected in the wines. The steep terraces require specialized viticulture practices, making the wines produced here a true labor of love. Moreover, Condrieu is exclusively dedicated to the Viognier grape, unlike many other regions that diversify with multiple varietals. This focus has allowed producers to perfect their craft, further elevating the global status of Condrieu wines.
Condrieu is most renowned for its white wines made exclusively from the Viognier grape. These wines are celebrated for their opulent aromas, often reminiscent of ripe stone fruits, citrus, and a bouquet of flowers. On the palate, they can be lush and viscous, displaying a harmonious balance between richness and acidity. The elegance and complexity of these wines make them instantly recognizable to enthusiasts and novices alike, earning them a prominent spot in the global wine arena.
Selecting the "best" wines from Condrieu can be subjective as preferences vary from one individual to another. However, several producers have gained international acclaim for consistently delivering exceptional bottles. Names like Domaine Georges Vernay, André Perret, and Domaine Yves Cuilleron are often associated with top-tier Condrieu wines. These producers, among others, have been pivotal in shaping the region's reputation, showcasing the true potential of the Viognier grape when cultivated in its most revered homeland.
