Critic reviews

The Wine Front – “Sourced from the Top Bush block on the Wait vineyard in the Blewitt Springs sub-region of McLaren Vale. Planted in the mid 1940’s.” Gets 100% whole bunch. Always good to taste these single vineyard expressions of McLaren Vale Grenache side by side. Well, this is pretty exotic, with loads of spice, rosy perfume and Earl Grey tea, ripe cherry and raspberry. It’s firm and tannic, lots of dust and gravel in feel, crisp cranberry acidity though rich red fruit, ginger biscuits, and lavish pumice stone tannin on a finish of excellent length. Serious and structured, and really very impressive. - Gary Walsh, 29 May 2023

James Halliday – Sourced from the old bush vine block on the Wait Vineyard, in Blewitt Springs. Arguably the most filigreed and complex of these single-vineyard iterations by virtue of its brood and carnal complexities: blood orange seeped with kirsch, woodsmoke and clove. Like the finest Sicilian-accented negroni. Straddles pinosity and nebbiolo-inspired boniness all at once, while laying the structural lattice to define a long, thrilling ride to the finish. Yet there is the mescal and dill-pickle note suggesting a bit more ripeness may be not such a bad idea. - Ned Goodwin MW (Halliday)

Robert Parker/Wine Advocate – Wow. This is sensational. Saturated red fruit frames the experience given by this 2022 Wait Single Site Grenache from Blewitt Springs. Succulent. I want to repeat the word, but I won't. It has notes of raspberries, redcurrants, pomegranates and red licorice. The tannins are meaty/bloody and savory but oh so fi ne, and they balance the pure red fruit so nicely. What an exciting wine—it's a wine I can appreciate and write about and observe, but ultimately, it's a wine I want to drink. Ripper. Highly/warmly/fervently recommended. - Erin Larkin, 20 July 2023

Huon Hooke – Medium-deep and bright red-purple hue; the bouquet is sweetly spiced raspberry to dark cherry with hints of cola and Campari, utterly charming, while the palate is medium bodied at best and succulently smooth and supple in texture. Fruit sweet and delicious. An outstanding grenache of the modern style. Previous comments apply, but it deserves a higher rating. - Huon Hooke

Description

Part of the premium SV Grenache range, the fruit used to make this wine is sourced from a single vineyard in the northeast corner of the Blewitt Springs area of McLaren Vale owned by the Wait family. The most structural and savoury wine in the range, brooding in character with earth and briary characters dominating the palate.

Deeply coloured with an intense purple hue. Savoury aromatics of turned earth, root
vegetable, and dark cherry are subtle but have great depth. The palate is firm with a very savoury and slightly saline edge. Tannin is the most prominent of the three SV wines, it comes in waves and carries the savoury edge of the wine across the palate with great length. The longest palate of the three, this wine will stand up to a rich food pairing and will benefit with time in the cellar.

Sourced from the Top Bush block on the Wait vineyard in the Blewitt Springs sub-region of McLaren Vale. Planted in the mid 1940’s, this block is dry grown and provides small berries with intense flavour and prominent tannin.

The fruit was hand-picked on the 4th of April and processed as a 100% whole bunch ferment. After a slow and cool ferment, the fruit was pressed to large format neutral French oak where it remained on full lees until racking for bottling in February 2023.
