Critic reviews

James Suckling – A complex, layered malbec that shows a touch of white pepper and cigar box. Blackberries, chiles, chocolate and f ine spices. Really juicy and compact, but nothing hefty. Quintessential flavors with dusty tannins that keep growing.

Vintage Vigilant

We aim to have all wines above $30 be vintage specific. In the case the listed vintage is out of stock and you note you would like that particular vintage, we will inform you via email for approval to go ahead.

97 POINTS - Vinous, Joaquin Hidalgo
" The 2021 Malbec Nicasia Vineyard originates from a small
plot nestled within Paraje Altamira, Uco Valley. It was aged
up to 16 months in concrete vats and foudres and boasts a
deep purple color. The complex nose unveils layers of crushed
plums, blueberries, herbs, curry, lavender and graphite.
Initially dry and plush, the palate transitions into a taut, chalky,
overwhelming, and juicy texture, as if embodying structure
and suppleness. This unique and flavorful Malbec offers a
high-pitched intensity of flavor that lingers, showcasing a
prolonged focus on the fruit."

Located in the far southerly growing region of Altamira in La Consulta, the Nicasia vineyard is the only planting of the special Catena Selection of Malbec cuttings in this traditional area for Malbec. La Consulta was Nicolás Catena’s father Domingo’s preferfed Malbec location.

VINIFICATION
This wine goes through an extensive cold maceration (10% - 20% whole cluster) of 3-12 days at less than 50ºF (10ºC) to extract aromas. The juice is then fermented for around 18-25 days with a total maceration of approximately 23-29 days. Elevage: 16-21 months in French Oak barrel.

VINEYARD
Nicasia Vineyard: Nicasia Vineyard: 3,593 ft (1,095 m). Altamira in La Consulta District, Uco Valley, Mendoza, Argentina. Very shallow loamy topsoil with surface gravel and gravelly (large stones) dry riverbed subsoil - optimal drainage. Malbec. Plant selection: Catena Cuttings malbec selection.

Wines of Argentina

Argentina is the 5th largest wine producing nation in the world and the most important in South America. Summers here are generally hot and dry while snowy winters help to irrigate vineyards as melted snow flows down from the Andes mountains. Grapes very easily achieve full ripeness due to these growing conditions.

There are many grape varietals planted in Argentina, but the most famous and important is Argentinian Malbec. Grown best in the equally famous Mendoza region, the top-rated Malbec’s come from the high altitude sub regions of Luján de Cuyo and the Uco Valley. These districts are located in the foothills of the Andes mountains between 850 and 1,520m in elevation. Argentinian winemaker Nicolas Catena Zapata was the first person to plant Malbec at such a high elevation of 1,500 metres, and is widely credited for elevating the status of Argentinian Malbec and the Mendoza region with this successful move.

Besides Malbec, there are many other grape varietals planted in the country. However, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay are the two other varietals that are most notable. Pedro Gimenez is the most widely planted white grape varietal in Argentina, but unfortunately it does not get much exposure internationally.
