The top tier wine of the Chalmers whites, Fiano has shone since day one in both Chalmers vineyards and has really made its home in Heathcote proving that the famous Cambrian soil is just a special for what it imparts to whites as it does to reds.
Chalmers Fiano always has a portion of wood in the winemaking including one large 2000 litre chestnut botte and old French oak barrels. It is also bottle aged before release to help emphasise that natural bees-waxy texture of the variety. For those with patience, it will reward them tenfold as it ages with aplomb taking on characters not too dissimilar to the great white wines from Burgundy, so stick it in your cellar for a couple years and serve it at your dinner party, they will love it!
The 2022 vintage showed more generosity and richness to the previous vintage, but still with all the quality drive Fiano notes we’ve come to love. With autumn spice, wood sorrel, pine needle and almond meal characters, the wine is textural, poised, and drives all those lovely morish flavours right to the back palate and then lingers.

Heathcote Wines

The Heathcote wine region in central Victoria is well known for its excellent red wines, most notably Shiraz. Heathcote reds are defined by their inky depth of colour, and deep, dark complex fruit flavours. This is combined with well balanced tannins and acid that help to give the wines great cellaring potential.
All this is made possible by the terroir. The Heathcote region sits at between 160m and 380m elevation with a temperate climate of even rainfall. The soils are rich in calcium red soils made up of “greenstone”. These soils are prized for their water retention capabilities allowing them to drain freely but still hold enough water throughout the growing season. The grapes that result are small and concentred which in turn make rich concentrated wines.

James Halliday – First things first: it's flavoursome. It tastes of pears and honey, roasted spices and something floral, like frangipani. That would be enough in itself, but it also feels characterful; there's a waxiness to the texture, and a tautness, along with whispers of crushed fennel and brine. It can easily be enjoyed as a 'fruity white wine', but if you want to look deeper, there's plenty to discover. -Campbell Mattinson
