World Wine – "There was some debate around a decade ago that this iconic Margaret River winery had lost a little of its glitter and that the wines were not what they once were. I was not quite as onboard with that as some – in fairness, it is not easy to remain at the pinnacle for a half-century – but in recent years, the levels of quality they have attained have put to rest any such doubts. These guys now make some of the most thrilling wines in Margaret River and none better than their Cabernet. There are some world-class Cabs made in the region and the MW sits with the very best. This vintage ranks with the finest of recent releases and there have been some crackers. To be honest, to look at this, I slipped it into a tasting which friends had organised, which was of some “super-second level” Bordeaux and great Margaret River Cabernets, from vintages as far back as 1990, right up to today. It will give an indication of how well it went if I tell you that one friend, not usually known for purchasing anything other than the great wines of Europe, rang the next day to say he had already picked up a six-pack. 96% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% each of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, this is elegance personified. A low yielding and slightly cooler vintage, the grapes went into small open tanks for fermentation, with thrice-daily hand-plunging. 15 days on skins and then pressed to tank before it was racked to French oak, 15% new. Over two years maturation. As mentioned, elegance personified. A silky combination of coiled power and finesse, this is a glorious Cabernet. Blackberries, spices, tobacco leaves, kid leather, violets, cigar box notes, aniseed and delicately integrated oak. There is a gossamer-like web of complexity weaving through the wine. Seamless, great length and cashmere tannins. This is a brilliant wine. Ten years, twenty years? How long have you got? If you are serious about great Australian Cabernet, this is a must for your cellar. 99." - Ken Gargett, Wine Pilot.

Huon Hooke – ‘Deep, bright red-purple colour with a reserved, shy bouquet that leads into a similarly latent palate where masses of fine tannins lie stealthily in wait. Subtle violet and blackberry traces. There is tremendous depth and muscle to this wine but it is still a little in its shell and needs more time to open. Masses of tannin bode well for its future in the cellar. Decanting may work if broaching it young. (89% cabernet sauvignon, 5% merlot, 3% cabernet franc, 3% malbec. Aged in 55% new oak for 14 months).’ 98 points. Huon Hooke, The Real Review

World Wine – 'This is a seriously good semillon, just starting to open up and drink well, and will continue to do so for many years. The palate is juicy and ripe, fresh and clean and bright, with delicious lemon/herb fruit and a compelling juiciness. Already eminently drinkable.' 95 points - Gourmet Traveller Wine

Huon Hooke – 'Light straw-yellow colour. The aromas are superbly fresh and intense, youthful and bright, with herb and lemon aromas of real charm. The palate is juicy and ripe, fresh and clean and bright, with delicious lemon and herb and a compelling juiciness. It's fresh, youthful, reserved and not at all austere or tight. The acidity is perfectly balanced, the wine is eminently drinkable now and will certainly age well. A seriously good young semillon.' 95 points - Huon Hooke, Therealreview.com

The Wine Front – One of my most favourite wines. Blackcurrant, blackberry, sarsaparilla/liquorice pastille, so much violet here, and spiced cedar oak. Medium-bodied, dark fruit with some redcurrant in the mix, tobacco and pencils, a little chew to gravelly tannin, fresh too, with a firm long finish. Delivers so much flavour without being heavy. Beautiful. 96 points. Gary Walsh, The Wine Front October 2021

World Wine – This 2016 vintage of Emilien is a real gem and one of the best wines I tasted in 2019. As with all vintages the first thing that strikes you is the glorious jewel-like colour. The nose is attractively fruity, with ripe red fruit aromas dominated by cassis and redcurrant with hints at sous-bois and gravel. The palate is silken, medium-bodied and precise, with velvety tannins paving the way for long and complex finish. A wine of great finesse, sensual in its youth but also with the potential to age and grow for several decades. The epitome of elegance and refinement.

The Wine Front – "Made using shiraz, pinot meunier and pinot noir. Deliciousness writ large. It crackles through the glass in spice-sparked style but it’s also perfumed and generous. Pomegranate, red cherry, sandalwood and all those spice notes. A dry, perfumed road. Like this quite a lot." - Mike Bennie

James Halliday – "The National Trust classification of this great 19th-century winery, history seeping from every pore, is jealously guarded by Alister Purbrick. The wine has retained good hue and, while it is not quite at the Olympian level of the 2006, it is in the mainstream of the Tahbilk style, with attractive cassis, berry and earth aromas, then a medium-bodied and particularly well-balanced palate, the red and blackberry fruit supported by fine, ripe tannins. Fifteen years will not tire it." James Halliday ~ www.winecompanion.com.au

World Wine – The West Australian Ray Jordan has had almost as many wines as waters but he can still be impressed, bestowing on a couple of married Margaret River vignerons his highest-ever score of 99 out of 100. The Weekend West’s wine writer said Moss Wood’s 2014 Wilyabrup cabernet sauvignon is as close to perfect as a wine could be, even edging out the celebrated Penfolds Grange. “I’ve always maintained Grange is Australia’s greatest wine but it’s not necessarily our best,” Jordan said. “To me, Moss Wood cabernet encapsulates everything that’s Margaret River and this one just absolutely nailed it.” Most critics agonise over a low score, but Jordan thought long and hard about going into uncharted 99 territory. “I pride myself on giving scores that are relevant and over the years I’ve seen a lot of really good wines that have gone only as high as 98 points,” he said. “But this cabernet is a cut above, even upon release — who knows how good it’ll be in a few decades. “It’s a wine that will live for 40 years,” Jordan said. “That’ll see me off the planet and a lot of other people. “And when you think about it, at $120-odd a bottle ... Grange and Hill of Grace are up over $800 a bottle. I think I’d rather six bottles of the Moss Wood.”

A blend of 70% Merlot 20% Cabernet Franc and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, the Duc de Nauves is Bordeaux made without manipulation so it is fruity, lithe, sensual and delicious. As someone who has had only one eye open to the wines of Bordeaux for most of my career, this wine actually made me smile! Here is a super, fruit driven wine offering amazing value for the quality.

The Wine Front – "Col McBryde one of the best winemakers in Australia, I reckon. Spicy, exotic, blueberry and boysenberry pie, nutty and floral. It’s medium to full-bodied, a great set of deep gravelly tannin and a distinct ‘liquid mineral’ feel to it, if that makes any sense, with cool acidity, and a ferrous and gently saline finish of excellent length, again those tannins really impressive, finishing off the wine beautifully. And what value!" - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

The Wine Front – Dark cherry, aniseed, earth, spicy cinnamon oak on show, plenty of spice. Medium bodied, but firmly tannic, with a black tea character, ‘minerality’ aplenty, ginger biscuit, intense and driving, with serious length leaving a fan of tannin in its wake. Needs at least three years in bottle. Serious stuff.

ww97

World Wine – Full, even, dark, black-red colour, a little lighter on the edge. This has a full, rich nose of ripe black cherry and black-berried fruits with notes of liquorice and lifted spicy oak, entwined with fine black herb and savoury whole bunch stalk perfumes. The nose has real intensity and vitality. Medium-full bodied, the palate is wonderfully rich and succulent with flavours of ripe black cherry and black-berried fruits, along with blackberry compote and a layering of spicy oak, with well-integrated whole bunch stalk elements and dark herb detail. The fruit sweetness and richness is balanced by very fine-grained powdery tannin extraction, and the palate is enlivened by fresh, vibrant acidity lending vitality and energy. The wine carries to a very long, lingering finish of black fruits, liquorice and spices. This is a succulently rich and vibrant, black-fruited Pinot Noir with layers of spice, oak, dark herbs and whole cluster complexities on a very fine-grained, fresh palate. Match with Middle Eastern lamb dishes and most game meats over the next 8-9+ years. 19.5/20 Points Raymond Chan Wine Reviews, April 2017

ws96

Wine Spectator – This powerful wine is tightly wound yet very expressive, with plenty of torque to the plum and blood orange flavors at the core, slowly revealing details of cedar, tobacco, cumin seed, rosemary and black tea. Everything sings in harmony on the long finish. Drink now through 2027.

The Wine Front – Cherry, plum, dark chocolate, dried rose, lead pencil, baking spice. It’s medium-bodied, saline and distinctly ‘mineral’ with a ferrous quality, crushed slate tannin, spice, I’m thinking Davidson plum?, with that hint of tartness, a musky perfume, so much energy, combining light and shade, and a long gently chewy tannic finish. Distinctive wine stamped firmly with a sense of place.

js96

James Suckling – A nose of blackcurrant, tobacco leaf, graphite and moss. Medium- to full-bodied with chewy, structured tannins. Linear onto the palate with an array of black fruit and savory herbs. Oolong and bark. Lovely balance and depth. A bit closed at the moment but will open and expand with some age. 91% cabernet sauvignon, 4% merlot, 3% cabernet franc and 2% malbec. From biodynamically grown grapes. Best after 2025. Screw cap.
