The Wine Front – Fair to say that I love this. It’s simple and comforting but there’s complexity if you go looking. Fine graphite, dried herb, mineral and sweet-sour cherry flavours come flecked with dirt, dust, something. There’s a ripple to this, a dryness, a slow dawning of the tight. In an ideal world this wine, or one like it, would be available on every wine list in the land. It’s the kind of perfect dry-light red wine that makes scoring irrelevant, as many of the best-drinking wines do.

This Dogliani DOCG is from the wonderful diversity of Monterustico estate vineyards, located in what is considered the home of the greatest and most structured Dolcetto wines. Monterustico Dogliani Dolcetto is a wine of power and depth yet possesses lift and energy. It’s a Dogliani for the table that won’t mind being forgotten for a few years in the cellar. 2019 was the first vintage to be certified organic. The fruit comes from three different vineyards with distinctive terroirs: Monterustico, Casabianca and Zovetto. Monterustico, located 300m up, has predominantly red clay that unleashes depth and power. Casabianca, at 270m, is characterised by a mix of alluvial loam and gravel. The most aromatic and spicy fruit comes from here. Zovetto, the highest of the sites at 340m, features older soils that are mainly composed of white marls. This is the vineyard that contributes elegance and length to the wine. Grapes from vines aged 15 to 45 years old were hand harvested before 18-24 days of gentle maceration. This was followed by six months’ aging in stainless-steel.

The wine is a beautiful, deep violet-purple in colour. The brooding nose is a cornucopia of blueberries, wild berries and delicate mineral nuances. There’s a suggestion of liquorice and Mediterranean herbs, too. The palate is structured yet balanced by wonderful, velvety fruit. With its long and pure finish, this is a wine that promises a long life ahead, and it provides a joyful pairing with a wide range of dishes. – Giuseppe Vaira

Wines of Piedmont

In the North-Western corner of Italy, with a backdrop of the visually stunning Alps, Piedmont is a great place to visit for wine tourism. It is also home to some of the most sought-after wines in the country.

Nebbiolo is the region’s most prestigious grape variety, a red variety not seen much in Australia. Wines made from this grape are powerful with remarkably high levels of tannins but a balancing acidity. The Piedmont region offers the grapes with a reliable autumn fog that provides a cooling effect which is particularly beneficial to the growth of Nebbiolo. This pre-harvest fog (“nebbia” in Italian) is actually where the grape’s name comes from. The fog is vital in that it prolongs the time spent on the vine and allows the grapes to achieve full ripeness.

The most famous examples of Nebbiolo come from the appellations (subregions) of Barolo and Barbaresco, known for their ability to age well, firm tannins and distinct smell of tar and roses. Barolo is a big tannic expression of Nebbiolo, while Barbaresco only about 15km away makes a more elegant style. Barolo wines are generally the more expensive of the two and are known to cellar for decades.

By volume however, Barbera is the most planted red grape in Piedmont. This grape makes a juicy, low tannin but high acidity easy-going red. Perhaps somewhat like a lighter style Shiraz.

While there are quite a few white varieties planted in the region, the most notable is Moscato d’Asti, made in a sparkling style in the Asti subregion.
