Although Mader’s wines from Grand Cru Rosacker steal the show, his entire line-up is recommended.’ Jacqueline Friedrich - The wines of France
This small estate based in Hunawihr has been well regarded as one of the best value small producers in Alsace for a decade or two and is now moving to another level again, with Jerome Mader taking the reigns from his father Jean-Luc in recent years. Together, this father and son team have converted the estate to organic farming and between them make a formidable team in the vineyards. In the winery, Jerome has taken over the winemaking, but still has the wise counsel and experience of Jean-Luc at the ready.
The village of Hunawihr and its terroirs are the key to the style and quality of the wines produced at this estate. The village is located very close to the Vosges, but with a little valley separating it from the mountains proper. This has the effect of retaining cool air and funnelling it through the vineyards, moderating any hot weather compared to vineyards that are planted further out on the flats. This adds a vibrant freshness to wines that are already blessed with naturally bright acidity conferred by the terroirs around Hunawihr and Ribeauville. Here the decomposed granite and clay terroirs are underlain by limestone resulting in some of the most age-worthy Rieslings in all of Alsace.
Now certified organic, all vineyards are harvested by hand in successive tries with final yields being significantly lower than the AOC limits. Natural yeast fermentation helps preserve the signature of each terroir, while whole bunch pressing aims for purity, elegance and refinement. These are eye-opening wines that not only give great pleasure now but have the capacity to age well .
