Critic reviews

The Wine Front – Dark cherry, a little liquorice and cinnamon sticks, black tea, a bit of wet soil. Rich and stony, ferrous feel, fresh too, with an earthy spiced tea finish of excellent length. Not quite the usual Bussia power, though has a charm and freshness that’s a hallmark of the better wines from this unusual vintage. I kept tossing up between 93 and 94 points; one of those wines. - Gary Walsh, 30 January 2023

James Suckling – Bright berries and a hint of pomegranate, together with damp chalk and some fern. Medium-bodied with a tight, focused palate and firm, light-grained tannins. Quite a racy feel to this now. Should broaden out with another couple of years in bottle. Try from 2024. 26 January 2022

Decanter – The Einaudi estate is an incredibly charming winery based in Dogliani. Their winemaking is pretty classic, with fermentation in concrete as well as in stainless steel tanks, then long ageing in large oak vessels after 20-25 days of maceration on the skins. Bright garnet in the glass, it's funky at first with a sort of straw and farmyard character giving austere complexity; thereafter the grace of wild strawberry and cinnamon. Angular, firm and refreshing, the palate is more extracted than supple in a perfect stern Bussia style, with an austere finish displaying a great savoury flavour. It's not without balance for the long haul. 20 July 2022

Huon Hooke – Medium brick-red with definite tawny tints in the rim; there is a sweet herbal aroma reminiscent of a decaying floral arrangement. The palate is lean and tense, firm and almost nervy, with good intensity of flavour and sinewy drying tannins; very savoury, and quite long-lasting. A smart wine and a complementary style to the Cannubi. 29 September 2022

About this Wine

Born from the vineyards of Bussia in Monforte d’Alba, recently purchased and directly managed by the Company to expand the Barolo crus range with specific characteristics. The particular mineral component of Bussia’s terroir gives the wine a great structure, an intense colour, clear and enveloping tannins and a long and consistent aftertaste. The scent of red fruits such as raspberry and pomegranate very ripes are well blended with spicy and balsamic notes.

A wine that is adept at the long evolution in the bottle, up to 25-30 years and more in the best vintages.

Wines of Piedmont

In the North-Western corner of Italy, with a backdrop of the visually stunning Alps, Piedmont is a great place to visit for wine tourism. It is also home to some of the most sought-after wines in the country.

Nebbiolo is the region’s most prestigious grape variety, a red variety not seen much in Australia. Wines made from this grape are powerful with remarkably high levels of tannins but a balancing acidity. The Piedmont region offers the grapes with a reliable autumn fog that provides a cooling effect which is particularly beneficial to the growth of Nebbiolo. This pre-harvest fog (“nebbia” in Italian) is actually where the grape’s name comes from. The fog is vital in that it prolongs the time spent on the vine and allows the grapes to achieve full ripeness.

The most famous examples of Nebbiolo come from the appellations (subregions) of Barolo and Barbaresco, known for their ability to age well, firm tannins and distinct smell of tar and roses. Barolo is a big tannic expression of Nebbiolo, while Barbaresco only about 15km away makes a more elegant style. Barolo wines are generally the more expensive of the two and are known to cellar for decades.

By volume however, Barbera is the most planted red grape in Piedmont. This grape makes a juicy, low tannin but high acidity easy-going red. Perhaps somewhat like a lighter style Shiraz.

While there are quite a few white varieties planted in the region, the most notable is Moscato d’Asti, made in a sparkling style in the Asti subregion.
