James Suckling – "An attractive Mosel Kabinett with expressive, stony slate character and effusive floral and lemon-zest aromas. Sleek body with beautifully integrated acidity and a long, very clean wet-stone finish. Drink or hold."

Robert Parker/Wine Advocate – "The 2021 Bernkasteler Badstube Riesling Kabinett is clear and fine yet still discreet in its aromas on the elegant and flinty/slatey nose. Sweet and round yet elegant and refined on the palate, this is a light but lush Badstube Kabinett with fine grip, charming texture and a crystalline and saline finish. 7.5% stated alcohol combined with 55.7 grams per liter of residual sugar."

Wine Enthusiast – Haag’s value entry-level Riesling shares the same smoky, seductive spice and earth tones of the producer’s more expensive single-vineyard bottlings, but with an immediately approachable fruitiness and zeal. Just a shade off-dry, it’s packed with thirst-quenching white grapefruit and peachy goodness anchored by a firm, mineral undertone. Best now–2023.

James Suckling – Did you say pasta carbonara? Where is the tomato salad? This riesling is such a joyful wine with a ton of white peaches and a dry enough balance. Such a refreshing finish.

rp92

Robert Parker/Wine Advocate – The 2019 Riesling is pure, bright and crystal-clear on the precise, floral and finessed nose. Round and juicy on the palate, this is a very delicate and stimulating Riesling in the off-dry style. The wine has enormous grip, and you won't stop longing for it. Absolutely fabulous! 11% alcohol. Tasted from AP 1 20 in April 2020.

The Wine Front – Fermented in stainless steel tanks, with long ageing on the fine less (2y), no batonnage then 2 years in bottle. Bone dry style. Mainly from red slate grand cru vineyards. Lime pie, lime curd. Lots of that ripe citrusy quality but with a dairy-milky softness and roundness. Green orange zest. Sweet basil and mint. There’s depth of minerality in flavours, tingling textural quality like in a gin and tonic. I find subtle candle wax, oregano, sage and grapefruit in the mix too. Long finish. This equals complexity and deliciousness. – Kasia Sobiesak, The Wine Front.

Wine Spectator – Intense and vibrant, this awakens the senses with piquant acidity that underscores the passion fruit, lime and apple flavors. Shows firm structure and fine length, but the elements need time to come together in harmony. Best from 2022 through 2034.

James Suckling – The right edge of reductive funk here and a very fresh array of white-nectarine and lime aromas and succulent flavors. Sublime freshness and drinkability here.

Robert Parker/Wine Advocate – Oliver Haag has stopped suppressing the vineyard name on the label of his Brauneberger "village" wine, so the newest release comes along as 2018 Brauneberger Juffer Riesling Kabinett. The wine has a very clear, fresh and crunchy slate bouquet but is still reductive (in a very attractive way, though) before it opens to very clear, attractive ripe stone fruit aromas intertwined with spicy slate notes. On the palate, this is a clear, lush, fresh, salty-piquant and delicately structured Riesling with gorgeous fruit and a crisp, salty/slatey finish.

Robert Parker/Wine Advocate – "Candied, spiced apple and overripe Persian melon dominate the Prum 2011 Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Auslese gold capsule, with honeyed impingement both aromatically and on the palate reinforcing the sense of relative opacity and rounded richness that the other Graachers in this year’s collection displayed. Here the sense of delicacy is nearly weightless; intriguing and enticing notes of liquid peony and lily enter the picture mid-palate after the wine takes on air; and for all of the botrytization in effect, there is a welcome retention of primary juiciness, spurring a lusciously long finish. Look for four decades or more of luxuriant satisfaction. Drink 2013 - 2053." - David Schildknecht - Wine Advocate (Apr 2013)

Germany's wine landscape is as diverse as its history, with each region painting a unique picture of the country's viticultural artistry. The gentle undulating vineyards, nurtured by the Rhine and its tributaries, give rise to wines that resonate with depth and complexity. The influence of Germany's continental climate, coupled with its varied soil types, makes each bottle a reflection of its origin. The nation's flagship grape, Riesling, is celebrated for its aromatic intensity and versatility, ranging from bone-dry to lusciously sweet. Yet, the tapestry of German wines extends beyond just Riesling. Varieties like Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) and Silvaner offer a glimpse into the multifaceted nature of German winemaking. As you explore these wines, you'll uncover stories of centuries-old vineyards, passionate winemakers, and a dedication to excellence that has cemented Germany's position in the global wine arena.
Wines from Germany are special due to their unique combination of rich history, diverse terroirs, and exceptional winemaking traditions. One of the distinguishing features of German wines is the influence of the country's cool climate on the grape-growing process. This climate contributes to the production of wines with vibrant acidity, expressive aromatics, and a remarkable ability to reflect the specific vineyard sites. Germany is also renowned for its iconic Riesling wines, which showcase a wide spectrum of flavors ranging from delicate floral notes to zesty citrus and ripe stone fruits. The meticulous attention to detail in the vineyard and cellar, coupled with a commitment to sustainable and organic practices, further enhances the quality and character of German wines.
German wines encompass a variety of styles and varietals, but Riesling and Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) are among the most popular and recognizable. Riesling, celebrated for its ability to express terroir and age gracefully, remains a hallmark of German winemaking. Spätburgunder, on the other hand, has gained international recognition for its elegance and depth, particularly from regions like Baden and the Ahr. Both of these varieties have contributed to shaping Germany's reputation as a producer of top-quality, versatile wines that cater to a wide range of palates.
If you're exploring German wines for the first time, starting with a classic Riesling is highly recommended. Look for a Riesling from the Mosel or Rheingau regions, as these areas are celebrated for producing some of the finest expressions of the grape. Opt for a Kabinett or Spätlese level of sweetness to experience the balance between acidity and fruitiness that defines German Rieslings. Additionally, consider trying a Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) from regions like Baden or the Ahr to experience the elegance and depth of German red wines. These wines offer a great introduction to the diversity and quality that German winemaking has to offer.
Germany is home to a plethora of exceptional wines that have earned global recognition. Some of the best-known and highly regarded offerings include Joh. Jos. Prüm Rieslings from the Mosel, Weingut Fritz Haag Rieslings from the Mosel, and Dr. Heger Spätburgunders from Baden. These wines exemplify the balance, complexity, and precision that have made German wines highly sought after by enthusiasts and collectors alike. Exploring the best German wines offers a journey through a diverse range of styles and terroirs, showcasing the country's profound impact on the world of fine winemaking.
