Critic reviews

Huon Hooke – Deep purple-red colour with meaty/spicy aromas, a full bodied and concentrated shiraz, the palate nicely framed with abundant ripe and fleshy tannins. Long carry. Excellent wine; even better if cellared a couple more years. 16 January 2023

About this Wine
Good early winter rains throughout June and July replenished soil moisture. August was dry, and the vines shot into life in September with a nice even budburst considering the cooler than average minimum spring temperatures. Welcome rain fell during flowering with no major impact on fruit set.

Warmer than average maximum temperatures were seen throughout late spring and early summer, encouraging ideal ripening conditions. The weather pattern then changed, turning cool after a rain event on 9 January and we experienced cooler temperatures throughout the month. This was ideal weather conditions, allowing the vines to maintain leaf function and general health as we approached the ripening period.

February saw a return to above average temperatures and this combined with very healthy canopies brought on fruit maturity beautifully. The vineyard was entirely handpicked with each parcel of fruit carefully selected. Harvest of the Shiraz started on Monday 16 February and continued through until the last Shiraz was picked on Wednesday 25 February.

Heathcote Wines

The Heathcote wine region in central Victoria is well known for its excellent red wines, most notably Shiraz. Heathcote reds are defined by their inky depth of colour, and deep, dark complex fruit flavours. This is combined with well balanced tannins and acid that help to give the wines great cellaring potential.

All this is made possible by the terroir. The Heathcote region sits at between 160m and 380m elevation with a temperate climate of even rainfall. The soils are rich in calcium red soils made up of “greenstone”. These soils are prized for their water retention capabilities allowing them to drain freely but still hold enough water throughout the growing season. The grapes that result are small and concentred which in turn make rich concentrated wines.
