The Wine Front – Hattingley Valley are a premium sparkling wine producer from England, a country with a surprising history in the fizzy wine world. Indeed, some historians claim sparkling wine’s origins are from England. This wine comes from southern England vineyards. It’s a blend of pinot noir and pinot meunier with a portion that spends time in barrels to mature and lend complexity. This wine has some bite, in the best possible sense. Acidity is ultra perky, it’s all red apple and white strawberry in the palate with a toothsome chomp that sits amongst the vibrant fizz of the wine. Fragrance is on point; red berries, vanilla, smoke. The wine is powerful, racy and very refreshing. The finish is so good – like a sip of fresh grapefruit juice. Those who like labels would call it ‘an excellent aperitif style’. And it is.

Jancis Robinson – Rather delicate red fruit. Very crisp and zesty and super-tight. Finesse in texture and purity. Really fruity and long and zingy. I think this has more to give, given time.

Jancis Robinson – ‘Slightly herbal/ reductive, withheld nose. Smoky grapefruit. Salty, dry and stony, with restrained citrus fruit. Salty finish. Juicy and mouth-watering. Drink 2017-2025.’ 17/20 points, Julia Harding MW, JancisRobinson.com, August 2016.

James Halliday – Hand-picked and sorted; free-run juice cool-fermented in tank. There is a subliminal savoury edge to the bouquet and palate, possibly from more than one yeast at work, and also to crisp, crunch acidity. You pick up the extra level of flavour from ripe (not overripe) fruit on the back-palate and finish. Has the X-factor many Sauvignon Blancs lack.

The Wine Front – “Wonderful wine. Boysenberry, hazelnuts, charcuterie and charred sticks, chocolate and spice, and no doubt many other things. Medium bodied, assertive but beautiful crushed rock tannin, cool ‘minerally’ acidity, a spray of dried herb perfume through vivacious purple and blue fruits. Finish is chompy, tasty and long. Here’s a wine!” 95 points, Gary Walsh, winefront.com.au

Jancis Robinson – “A blend of 70% Shiraz and 30% Mataro (Mourvèdre), sourced from both Adelina's own vineyards and nearby sites. This is the most immediately expressive and vibrant of the three reds when first opened and poured, redolent of damp black earth and hints of iodine and graphite – characters often found in the red wines of Adelina's famous neighbour Wendouree. With air and time, the various flavour components mellowed and gave way to glossy black fruit.” Max Allen, jancisrobinson.com

Jancis Robinson – Light cherry red. Hint of cough-linctus sweetness on the nose and lots of sweet cherry fruit on the palate. Deliciously juicy, approachable and fresh but not without a gentle structure. 16 Points. http://www.jancisrobinson.com

Jancis Robinson – They have four different clones. 174 and 470 used for Amayna. High-density plantings to get good ripeness. Three or four green harvests per season. Earlier vintages may have been picked in June but now some blocks late April. Deep crimson. Gentle and savoury. Great texture. Racy and quite delicate. Good grainy finish.'

The Wine Front – It’s cool and spicy but it has both the fruit and the ripeness to (well and truly) carry the style. This is an excellent release; stylish; complex; steady-handed but with just enough x-factor. It’s all peppercorns and black pepper, black cherry into plum, and woodsmoke. It’s generally painted in oils but there’s a watercolour aspect. It feels elegant. It feels as though it’s going to mature well. And, as it breathes, a pretty/floral side to its personality is revealed. Very very nice wine. Monty for the medium term cellar.

James Halliday – Hand-picked, crushed, destemmed, 24 days fermentation and maceration, matured in French barriques (70% new) for 12 months, then transferred to a 5yo 4000l French foudre for a further 6 months, 9% ?14 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon from the Crayeres Vineyard added. The immediate energy and drive the wine has lifts it out of the ruck, extending the length of the palate and allowing the undeniably complex black fruits full airplay. This is a classy wine, period, full stop.

jr17

Jancis Robinson – From vines planted in 2008. Fermented and macerated for 24 days in one-tonne fermenters and then aged in for 12 months in French barriques (70% new from Vallaurine in the Rhône) before being racked into a five year-old 4,000l foudre for six months. It was blended with 9% Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon from the same vineyard before bottling in December 2015. Pungent, smoky, almost cordite nose and firm and ambitious on the palate. Serious stuff. Very long with the considerable tannins almost smothered by the intense violet fruit. Just 500 dozen bottles filled. Impressive but not ready.

The Wine Front – GG vineyard, 2.2 grams residual. Haze of honeycomb, ginger, ripe citrus. Good perfume. Slippery-textured in the palate, honeyed, ripe limes, juicy, concentrated ‘gras’ fatty feel, tight tangy acidity and finishes creamy and assertive. Has quite the sense of depth, and the play of texture is quite something.

rp94

Robert Parker/Wine Advocate – Subtle flavors of morels and porcini along with lime rind flavors lead to a dense, intense and refreshingly piquant palate. Very pure, mineral, firmly structured and finesse-full. The finish is very persistent and displays lots of limes and chalky flavors in the extremely salty finish. Great potential. 94-95 points.

Jancis Robinson – Apricots and peaches, but still very close-knit and not quite giving at this stage. A broad steel blade of acidity and beautiful in a fierce Boudicca kind of way.

Wine Spectator – Incredible unctuousness, while the aroma signals wet earth and mineral notes. Silky-smooth, it remains light on the palate, leaving the essence of apricot, honey and spice flavors, which fade gracefully on the long finish. Drink now through 2050.

jr18/20

Jancis Robinson – Great concentration of botrytis on the nose, there's some BA and TBA fruit in here. Toffee apple, honey, orange and grapefruit set a frame of complexity. A rich oily texture is offset by faint notions of acidity and Mandarin Napoleon orange bitterness. Luscious and generous.

Jancis Robinson – Super savoury and refreshing. Lovely sweet start and then great lively finish. Great appeal for its combination of depth and refreshment. Fine tannins on the end.

rp95

Robert Parker/Wine Advocate – The Mazoyères Chambertin Grand Cru has a crisp blackberry and bilberry-scented nose, more reticent than the Charmes-Chambertin at the moment and yet it is undeniably extremely focused. There is a subtle marine influence here that adds a little intrigue, some 'je ne sais quoi'. The palate is medium-bodied with supple ripe black fruit struck through with a keen thread of acidity. There is a little more body and weight on the finish compared to the Charmes-Chambertin, a residue of cold stone and a little pepper on the aftertaste. You come away thinking...that is a very serious wine. Cellar it for 4-5 years and you should have an outstanding counterpart to the domaine's 2014 Charmes-Chambertin.
