About this Wine

Medium to deep crimson with purple hues. An intense aroma of ripe Satsuma plum, mocha, vanilla, and savoury notes combined with hints of cedar and sweet spices. Rich, sweet fruit is balanced wonderfully with briary, sweet spices and lovely, silky tannins. A full-bodied, textural wine, showing great complexity with hints of cedar and allspice flowing through to the lengthy, bramble fruit finish.

Barossa Valley Wine

The Barossa Valley wine region has historically and currently still is one of Australia's most prestigious premium wine producing regions. Located just 60km north east of Adelaide city centre, the climate there is very hot and dry which is perfect for the big bold reds the area is famous for.

A straight Shiraz is what Barossa is most well known for, however Rhone blends, such as Shiraz Cabernet are also very popular. While much less prevalent, white wines (Chardonnay, Riesling, Semillon) are planted on the higher altitude hillsides where the ocean breeze cools temperatures down to a level suitable for producing these varieties as well.

Some of Australia's earliest Shiraz plantings can be found here dating as far back as the 1850's. While not always a guarantee of quality, it might be worth seeking out and trying one of the region's "old vine shiraz" if you haven't yet.

James Halliday – The big gun from Langmeil, this year 57% Freedom Vineyard (planted 1843) and 43% Pure Eden (planted in the 1890s). It's a deeply coloured, rich and concentrated release; fruit the essence of blackberry and plum with higher tones of blueberry and boysenberry. Deep layers of baking spice, panforte, dark chocolate, roasting meats, cedar and cocoa powder lie beneath the opulent fruit profile. Full bodied with impressive fruit depth (thank you, ancient vines) and power while retaining a sense of detail and elegance, quite often no mean feat. Oak, tannin, fruit and acidity all pull in the same direction and in harmony, with a finish that lingers persistently. Impressive stuff.
