Critic reviews

James Suckling – A beautifully mineral red with impeccable purity. Wet stones, red cherries and a hint of flowers and spice. Really chalky tannins with a bone-dry palate and a long, transparent finish. A combination of power and etherealness, creating perfect harmony. 100% whole bunch.

Jancis Robinson – From Gualtallary Monasterio. This wine goes through an extensive cold maceration (50% whole cluster) of 3 to 7 days at less than 10 °C to extract aromas. The juice is then fermented for around 10–19 days with a total maceration of approximately 8–12 days. Aged for 14 to 18 months in French oak barrels. For several years now winemaker Alejandro Vigil has been focused on treating his top Malbecs with a delicate hand in the cellar, and that allows nuances of fruit layers to come through in the wine. Blackberries and Victoria plum meddle with exotic spices, clove and a touch of cigar. There’s a fine spine of tannins and tension with firm acidity that gives a powerful finish. This cool vintage will age nicely.

Vintage Vigilant

We aim to have all wines above $30 be vintage specific. In the case the listed vintage is out of stock and you note you would like that particular vintage, we will inform you via email for approval to go ahead.

95 POINTS - Aaron Romano, Wine Spectator
"Elegant, fresh and inviting at the onset, with violet, hibiscus
and blood orange notes that join a smooth-textured palate of
raspberry coulis and red currant, melding into richer tiers of
dark chocolate and graphite that linger around fine tannins,
echoing back to the core flavors."

97 POINTS - Vinous
"The 2021 Malbec Adrianna Vineyard Fortuna Terrae is sourced from a small plot situated in Gualtallary, featuring a soil profile with a depth of one meter. It underwent a meticulous 16-month aging process in foudres and concrete vats and exhibits a dark purple hue. The nose presents enticing lavender, mint, mountain herbs, orange peel and curry aromas layered over a foundation of dried flowers. The palate offers a compelling combination of dryness and juiciness. The rich and taut mouthfeel imparts a vibrant energy that flows into a compact yet delicately lingering finish. A unique and flavorful Malbec, it marries a primary style with a terroir-driven conceptual approach."

Fortuna Terrae means luck of the land in Latin, and indeed, the vines from this parcel of the Adrianna Vineyard are lucky. The loamy soils are home to many varieties of native grasses which prevent erosion and attract insects, singing birds and mountain foxes. Because of the freshness imparted by the deep soils and high altitude, the wines of Fortuna Terrae have optimal acidity and delicate flower aromas. It is best to enjoy these wines a few years or decades after harvest.

Over the years, Nicolás Catena Zapata discovered the influence altitude has on fruit quality. As one climbs the altitudes of the Andes the average temperature decreases and the amplitude between day and night temperatures increases. Named after Nicolás Catena Zapata’s youngest daughter, the Adrianna Vineyard is located at almost 5,000 feet elevation in Mendoza.

Wines of Argentina

Argentina is the 5th largest wine producing nation in the world and the most important in South America. Summers here are generally hot and dry while snowy winters help to irrigate vineyards as melted snow flows down from the Andes mountains. Grapes very easily achieve full ripeness due to these growing conditions.

There are many grape varietals planted in Argentina, but the most famous and important is Argentinian Malbec. Grown best in the equally famous Mendoza region, the top-rated Malbec’s come from the high altitude sub regions of Luján de Cuyo and the Uco Valley. These districts are located in the foothills of the Andes mountains between 850 and 1,520m in elevation. Argentinian winemaker Nicolas Catena Zapata was the first person to plant Malbec at such a high elevation of 1,500 metres, and is widely credited for elevating the status of Argentinian Malbec and the Mendoza region with this successful move.

Besides Malbec, there are many other grape varietals planted in the country. However, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay are the two other varietals that are most notable. Pedro Gimenez is the most widely planted white grape varietal in Argentina, but unfortunately it does not get much exposure internationally.
