Pisa Range Estate is a pioneer grape grower of the Pisa district, north of Cromwell. The vineyard covers thirty-three hectares of flat and terraced land. The region is proving to be a prime pinot noir growing site; for three years from 1998 the grapes from this estate made up the Quartz Reef Pinot Noir before winemaker Rudi Bauer's own vineyard fruit came on-stream.
Over the last decade the combination of high growing degree days and Waenga sandy loam soils has consistently produced fine pinot noir under the ‘Black Poplar Block’ label - now rated as a New Zealand ‘Classic’ pinot noir, and since 2000 the wine has consistently received many local and international awards. The guiding principle in the management of the land - and in the winery - is 'minimal intervention. The aim is for the wines to express their 'sense of place'.
