About this Wine

A BEAUJOLAIS OF "CRU" QUALITY

"Earth and wild berries on the nose with a touch of peppercorns. Medium body with fine tannins. Round and creamy with a succulent character. Well-balanced with a flavorful finish." - James Suckling

"This Beaujolais-Villages offers a beautiful garnet red color with light glossy reflections. It gives off elegant aromas of red fruits and wild flowers. On the palate it is perfectly balanced: the soft and fruity attack precedes a fleshy and greedy texture. The finish is powerfully aromatic, with a nice freshness.

This estate, established in 1902, is managed by fourth generation vigneron Jean-Paul Dubost. Jean Paul is farming the small estate organically and the non-interventionist philosophy is carried through to the winemaking. JP uses no chemicals and minimal sulphur. His view is that this allows him to produce wines that express the qualities of the Gamay and the specific terroirs of his vineyards. He is extremely fortunate to have some ancient vines and this is reflected in the quality of all of his wines, not least the Beaujolais-Villages, which is as good as many of his neighbours’ Cru wines." - Dubost

"This Gamay is produced by the classic semi-carbonic maceration of whole clusters of grapes taking place over 15 days in steel tank. Bottled fresh with just a light filtration and no added sulphur, this is a cut-above the Beaujolais-Villages appelation. Many argue the Beaujolais-Lantignié commune tastes as good as a cru in its own right - perfectly evidenced by Dubost's wine and Lantignie may indeed still come to be designated as a Cru.

The commune of Beaujolais-Lantignié may have existed as an AOC since the 1930s, but for a long time its 110 hectares of vines have been more anonymously labelled as Beaujolais-Villages. Beaujolais-Lantignié has two faces – on its western side are bluestone soils like those of the Côte de Brouilly or the Côte du Py, on the eastern side it is granitic sand and rose granite, very similar to Chiroubles. Local producers argue these qualities of Lantignié make wines that are distinctive, and are working hard to differentiate themselves from the generic label of Beaujolais-Villages." - Wine House
