World Wine – Sales of this Grenache have been thundering along so the composition of this 2021 is slightly different from those of years gone by. The 2020 was made with 100% whole bunches off one site but an increase in production has seen two blocks blended. A 1949 planted block is 100% whole bunch and a second block planted in 1929 sees 30% whole bunches with the overall total now 61%. But let's just pause for a moment and consider the age of the vines contributing to this $40 wine... Extraordinary really when you look at the price. This 2021 is the first vintage that puncheons (8 year old) have been used to ensure a softer maturation. Slick describes this Grenache best. Softly textured, red fruits sing. It opens up and there is a savoury wrestle with fruit. Blue fruits rise up adding another level of prettiness. Picked at mid 13s brings a slight mintiness and red pepper character with it. But those soft blue and red berries waltz on and glisten. Superfine spices are draped through the mouth like a velvet blanket and that finish just goes on and on. A brilliant wine from a first-class Barossa vintage. Chase it down. Drink to five years+. (Q Wine Reviews)

Yalumba Vine Vale Barossa Valley Grenache 2022
In 2022, the two blocks were wild fermented separately - the first 31% whole bunch, the second 20% whole bunch fruit, resulting in this outstanding expression of Vine Vale Grenache. Bright ruby purple in colour. Pretty red cherries and blue berry fruits with the subtle scent of red grapefruit are intriguingly combined with suggestions of savoury herbs and spices. The palate is plush, juicy and succulent. Red and blue fruits are entwined in mocha flavours with bright acidity and fine, powdery tannins.

Barossa Valley Wine
The Barossa Valley wine region has historically and currently still is one of Australia's most prestigious premium wine producing regions. Located just 60km north east of Adelaide city centre, the climate there is very hot and dry which is perfect for the big bold reds the area is famous for.
A straight Shiraz is what Barossa is most well known for, however Rhone blends, such as Shiraz Cabernet are also very popular. While much less prevalent, white wines (Chardonnay, Riesling, Semillon) are planted on the higher altitude hillsides where the ocean breeze cools temperatures down to a level suitable for producing these varieties as well.
Some of Australia's earliest Shiraz plantings can be found here dating as far back as the 1850's. While not always a guarantee of quality, it might be worth seeking out and trying one of the region's "old vine shiraz" if you haven't yet.
