The Wine Front – From a suitably steep, clay and limestone riddled hillside in Savoie. This is a producer known for hard work in vineyard, literally, scuttling around on the angles of the vineyard, fiddling with low-yielding old vines. It’s said that producers in Savoie often suggest the labour is a folly, though the resulting wines are of quality and interest. Mondeuse is a grape variety I like drinking – lightish, fresh-feeling fruit profile, trimmed with firm tannins, brisk in acidity, when made well. You’d put it in the same sort of camp as gamay, poulsard and pinot noir, but from Savoie it can show a distinct ‘alpine herb’ character. Charming, generally. This is good drinking. Supple in texture, flesh of dark plums, that skinsy bitterness – the wine flows long with these characters, framed by very fine gravelly tannins, finishing with width and sour-sweetness in flavour. There’s a suggestion of mint, fennel and bergamot in perfume, but its set to those just-ripe plum characters, and something more spicy and savoury. Twist and puckers to close. Delight.
