Vat 47 holds a special place in Australian wine. When it was first released in 1971, it became the country’s first commercially available Chardonnay, and more than five decades later it remains the benchmark. The 2024 carries that heritage forward with the generosity, poise and assurance that define great Hunter Valley Chardonnay.

The fruit is entirely estate-grown, with a large share coming from old vines on the Short Flat Vineyard. Fermentation and maturation take place in French oak, used to build texture and harmony rather than to impart obvious oak character. The result is a full-bodied, layered wine with plenty of richness, balanced by the freshness and structure that keep it lively.

Vat 47 reliably punches above its weight. It is delicious on release and has a proven record of ageing gracefully. The style has become noticeably fresher over the years, so today’s Vat 47 is a thoroughly modern Hunter Chardonnay that honours its history without being bound by it.
