Read about Barsac

Barsac lies just to the north of Sauternes and under the AOC laws producers can bottle their wines either under the Sauternes appellation or Barsac.

The soils here contain less gravel and a mix of recent and more ancient alluvial deposits.

While both Barsac and Sauternes have essentially the same regulations, both being white wine only appellations permitting only Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon and Muscadelle, the wines of Barsac are racier with increased freshness and a nervy air than their more unctuous cousins to the south. Château Climens, Château Coutet and Château Doisy-Daëne are the standouts within the appellation.
