Il diffère de son grand frère (Château Ausone, AOC Saint-Emilion Grand Cru) par une part plus importante de merlot dans son assemblage, qui lui permet d'être dégusté plus jeune. Élevé 20 à 22 mois en barriques neuves, il bénéficie des mêmes soins que le Grand Vin et se fait plus rare: environ 5'000 bouteilles sortent des caves chaque année. Profond et racé, La Chapelle d'Ausone est un vin de haut niveau.
