James Suckling – Black cherries with cedar and dried flowers, as well as dusty earth. It’s medium-to full-bodied with firm tannins that are long and polished. Lots of structure. Very typical and focused. Drinkable now, but better in 2024.
Robert Parker/Wine Advocate – I tasted two vintages of the estate red that represents the blend and the character of the place. The 2018 Reserva comes from a cooler year and is a blend of 86% Tempranillo, 6% Mazuelo, 6% Graciano and 2% Garnacha with 14.12% alcohol and a pH of 3.48. The grapes ripened thoroughly and the wine is tasty but has a vibrant palate with freshness and depth. It has a classical nose and is complex and spicy with an earthy touch, a little developed and with fine-grained tannins. Very tasty. It spent 18 months in oak barrels, 90% of them French and 10% American; they are reducing the amount of American oak in this wine. - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
Graciano, often considered a hidden gem among wine aficionados, is primarily grown in the Rioja region of Spain. Traditionally, it played a secondary role, blended with other varieties like Tempranillo. However, in recent years, Graciano has emerged from the shadows, gaining recognition for its unique attributes. The grape produces wines with deep, vibrant colors and a pronounced aromatic profile, with hints of licorice, blackberries, and violets. Its high acidity and tannin structure give the wine an impressive aging potential, with mature bottles revealing complex layers of flavor and a smooth finish. The vines thrive in calcareous clay soils and require meticulous care, as the grape is susceptible to various diseases. The commitment to nurturing this variety, despite its challenges, showcases the dedication of vintners to preserving and promoting the rich heritage of Graciano.
Graciano wine is an exquisite red wine produced from the Graciano grape, a varietal primarily grown in the Rioja region of Spain. Known for its deep, almost inky hue and pronounced aromatic profile, Graciano wines often exhibit notes of blackberries, violets, and licorice. High in acidity and with a notable tannin structure, wines made from this grape have an impressive aging potential. While traditionally used as a blending component to enhance other wines, in recent times, Graciano has been recognized for its standalone quality, capturing the palates of wine enthusiasts around the world.
While Graciano grape has its roots firmly established in the Rioja region of Spain, it has ventured beyond its native soils. The Rioja region remains the epicenter of its production, known for producing wines of exceptional character and depth from this variety. Here, the calcareous clay soils and Mediterranean climate provide an ideal environment for Graciano to flourish. In addition, regions like Navarra in Spain and a few pockets in California and Australia are experimenting with Graciano, producing promising results.
Graciano, once overshadowed by other varietals, has started to earn accolades for its single varietal wines in recent years. While many top Rioja producers incorporate Graciano in their blends, certain vineyards offer pure Graciano wines that have garnered attention. Labels from prominent Rioja producers, who champion the grape's potential, often rank among the most popular. These wines exhibit the depth, vibrancy, and aromatic complexity that Graciano is celebrated for.
Given the increasing popularity of Graciano wines, there are several value-driven options available for enthusiasts. While premium bottles from renowned Rioja producers may fetch higher prices, numerous young Graciano wines or those from emerging regions offer outstanding quality for their price. They encapsulate the grape's essence, delivering its characteristic aroma and flavor profiles, without the hefty price tag often associated with aged or prestigious labels.
Graciano wines, with their robust flavor profiles and significant tannin structure, pair beautifully with hearty dishes. Red meats, especially lamb and beef, complement the wine's richness. Traditional Spanish dishes like paella, chorizo, or morcilla (blood sausage) are also harmonious pairings. For vegetarians, roasted vegetables, especially eggplant and bell peppers, and dishes with mushrooms or lentils, resonate well with Graciano's deep flavors. The wine's vibrant acidity means it can also cut through richer dishes, creating a delightful balance on the palate.
