The Wine Front – Raspberry jubes, cocoa and aniseed, fair perfume of dried herbs and flowers. Medium-bodied, choc-liquorice, juicy red berries, hazelnut, something a little more steely, saline, and ferrous, though that’s as yet more latent as the vibrant fruit is currently front and centre. A light graininess to tannin, freshness too, with a juicy finish of excellent length. It’s fun and bouncy now, though I reckon it will be better again in a few years when it settles down a bit. About This Wine

Torzi Matthews is well known for producing some of South Australia's best value reds and is a long-time favourites of ours. We recently welcomed this 'Old Vines' GSM from Torzi Matthews which is made from two old vineyards dating back to 1914 (Rowland Flat) and 1932 (Angaston Village).

A blend of 60% Grenache, 20% Shiraz and 20% Mataro, this 2022 Torzi Matthews Old Vines GSM is made via a mixture of whole berry and 25% whole bunch natural vineyard yeast ferment in small open top fermenters. Basket pressed into seasoned 500lt French oak barrels and bottled unfiltered, this captures the essence of old-vine GSM is a beautifully delicious and flavoursome red wine.

Barossa Valley Wine

The Barossa Valley wine region has historically and currently still is one of Australia's most prestigious premium wine producing regions. Located just 60km north east of Adelaide city centre, the climate there is very hot and dry which is perfect for the big bold reds the area is famous for.

A straight Shiraz is what Barossa is most well known for, however Rhone blends, such as Shiraz Cabernet are also very popular. While much less prevalent, white wines (Chardonnay, Riesling, Semillon) are planted on the higher altitude hillsides where the ocean breeze cools temperatures down to a level suitable for producing these varieties as well.

Some of Australia's earliest Shiraz plantings can be found here dating as far back as the 1850's. While not always a guarantee of quality, it might be worth seeking out and trying one of the region's "old vine shiraz" if you haven't yet.
