"Deeply colored, the 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape is a blend of 37% Grenache, 29% Syrah, 25% Mourvèdre, and the rest Cinsault and other permitted varieties. With classic notes of currants, ripe black cherries, new saddle leather, and peppery herbs, it's rich, full-bodied, and concentrated, with a pure, focused style that's going to age gracefully for 15-20 years. It's one of the finest classical cuvées I can remember."

Winemaker Notes
The terroir is typical of the region, with several soil types composing the estate, including clay-limestone, sand-clay, and sandstone strewn with the famous galets roulés. The grapes, partially destemmed, are put into vats, partly truncated and stainless steel. This is followed by the gentlest extraction possible, with few interventions and a long maceration period of four weeks.
Aging is restrained, partly in foudre, truncated vats and barrels, with 15% new wood and 10% old barrels, for 12 months to allow the material to infuse. After numerous tasting sessions, the final blend is determined and the wine is bottled six months later.

Review of February 5, 2026: After a 10-year dormancy in our cellars, what a pleasure it is to rediscover this Château La Nerthe 2016! On the nose, bursts of aromas of jammy berries emerge, a true hallmark of this exceptional vintage at Châteauneuf-du-Pape. These are complemented by spicy and camphor scents.
The palate is majestic: rich, full-bodied, and harmonious. The wine lives up to all its promises with a sumptuous, mouthwatering finish, offering an endless array of flavours, with touches of blackcurrant, eucalyptus, and spice. Enjoy it now or keep it for another decade or two in your cellar.

Wines of Rhone Valley
The Rhone wine region is situation in the south of France in the Rhone Valley. The region is split into north and south with distinctively different winemaking styles. In the north, the main grape used is Syrah and is sometimes blended with white varietals. In the south however, reds are a blend of Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre, Carignan and Cinsault. You may be familiar with this sort of blend; in Australia it is labelled GSM.
Wines are produced under various Appellation d'origine contrôlée (AOC) designations. The most prestigious of which is Chateauneuf-du-Pape. You may also have heard of other AOC names such as Gigondas, Hermitage, Lirac, St Joseph. Wines coming from these and other AOCs are all on the higher end of the market.
On the value end we have wines produced in Cotes-du-Rhone AOC. Cotes-du-Rhone often refers to wines made in the Rhone Valley that do not fall under any other AOC, often from the flatter areas around Southern Rhone. However, it also does include the fringes of well-respected northern appellations as well. In terms of volume, a majority of Rhone wine falls under the Cotes-du-Rhone AOC and it offers some of the best value in France and even some first-rate and age-worthy reds.
Full-bodied and flavourful white wine blends are also made in the region. These are typically a combination of Grenache Blanc, Marsanne, Roussanne and Viognier.
