Critic reviews

The Wine Front – Beautiful wine. Settled, balanced and composed. It’s driven by red cherry, strawberry and sweet spice flavours though woodsy herbs, chicory, undergrowth and mint notes are all contributors. It’s not a deep wine but it’s lengthy. It’s flushed with acidity but it still manages to feel silken. Every t crossed, every i dotted.

95 POINTS - Wine Pilot Ken Gargett
"This vineyard is planted on red soils in the Upper Yarra, east facing, with the MV6 clone. 160 dozen. Crimson/red. There is already some real complexity evident with this wine. We have notes of animal skins, fungal/truffly touches, some ferally undergrowth notes, red fruits, notably red cherries and some brambly earth tones. This is nicely balanced, with fresh, bright acidity. Fine, if ever-so-slightly grainy tannins plus good focus and length. Easy to see this wine still giving pleasure in a decade’s time."

95 POINTS - Qwine Reviews
Spicier than its George's Vineyard sibling, this Syme Vineyard release from Burton McMahon is a superb Yarra Valley Pinot Noir. Give it a little more time to see it at its best as was proven over a couple of days of tasting. Once it found its groove, there is a lot to love about the shape and presence of this wine. Spiced cherries and strawberries are all the rage. Some oak shows its hand but this will settle with some bottle age. Twigs, undergrowth and mushroom compost deliver a wonderful savoury appeal with a bright acidity capping things off. That super fine length and moreishness is what I'm here for. Bravo!

This wine is produced from the Syme on Yarra vineyard in the Upper Yarra Valley. Situated on the red volcanic soils of Seville, this East facing block produces perfumed yet structured Pinot Noir (MV6 clone). Deep red with a pale pink-red hue. The wine is perfumed, showing spiced dark cherries, subtle toasty oak, with a complex and savoury whole bunch earthy/lees character. The palate is long, showing dark berry fruits, nutmeg spice and hints of earthiness from the whole bunch. Defined tannins help to provide definition and length. This is complex Pinot Noir that will age over the medium to long term.

Yarra Valley Wine

The Yarra Valley wine region is the most important area of wine production in Victoria today, and with its proximity to Melbourne, also the most visited in the state.

Yarra Valley is split into the Upper Yarra and the valley floor. The Upper Yarra is cooler in climate due to its elevation and coupled with younger, fertile, red soils produces most of the region’s notable varietals: Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The valley floor is warmer and has predominantly grey soils with pockets of granite and limestone.

Pinot noir has long been considered a notoriously difficult variety to grow. However, the cool climate and longer growing seasons of the Yarra Valley allow the fruit to develop full flavoured and ripe character.

Chardonnay in the past has long been associated with a deep oily, buttery style that experiences full malolactic fermentation and great amounts of oak. This style has since fallen out of favour and wine makers in the Yarra Valley have capitalized on this trend to produce leaner, acid driven Chardonnays that are closer in style to those from Burgundy.
