A standout at a recent tasting, where the World Wine team and friends picked the D’Aloisio Chardonnay as their favourite wine and best-value wine of the tasting, compared to the other 150+ wines at the tasting.
The 2023 vintage shows a beautifully balanced style, with the warmer growing season bringing a touch more richness and buttery character while retaining the freshness and focus that Yarra Valley Chardonnay is known for. We also compared this vintage to the 2024 vintage and preferred this as we think this is Yarra Valley Chardonnay at its peak.
Appearance
Straw yellow in colour, with a pale hue and a green tinge.
Aroma
Lifted aromas of melon and nectarines combine with sweet spice and lifted nutty oak.
Palate
The palate shows delicious and mouth-coating flavours of melon and white peach. The lees characters are well integrated with the citrus fruits and acidi- ty, creating a creamy but well defined, focused, and fresh wine. We love the mid-palate ‘pop’ of fruit sweetness from this vineyard; it has its own personality which we think is great.
Region notes
The D’ Aloisio vineyard is located in the Seville Township, with a north-facing slope on red volcanic soils. The site has an altitude of 230m above sea level. Clone is I10V1. Slightly more forward and expressive style from this site.
Vinification
Fruit is hand-picked to ensure only clean, healthy bunches are selected. Grapes are then whole bunch pressed, and the juice settled overnight in tank. This was followed by a light racking directly to barrel (approximately 95% solids) where natural fermentation took place. MLF was not encouraged, and the wines were sulphered directly after primary.
Maturation
Maturation was over 10 months in 30% new (300-500L) French oak barrels. Finally, the wines were racked from barrel to tank, then filtered to bottle.
History & Awards
Burton Mcmahon winemaker Dylan McMahon, the long-time chief winemaker for Seville Estate, lead them to win the prestigious 2019 Halliday Winery of the Year awards.
While maintaining his deep ties to his family's legacy, he co-founded Burton McMahon—a side-project collaboration with his close friend Matt Burton from Gundog Estate.
Together, they produce amazingly elegant, single-vineyard Chardonnay, and this is such a beautiful example.

Yarra Valley Wine
The Yarra Valley wine region is the most important area of wine production in Victoria today, and with its proximity to Melbourne, also the most visited in the state.
Yarra Valley is split into the Upper Yarra and the valley floor. The Upper Yarra is cooler in climate due to its elevation and coupled with younger, fertile, red soils produces most of the region’s notable varietals: Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The valley floor is warmer and has predominantly grey soils with pockets of granite and limestone.
Pinot noir has long been considered a notoriously difficult variety to grow. However, the cool climate and longer growing seasons of the Yarra Valley allow the fruit to develop full flavoured and ripe character.
Chardonnay in the past has long been associated with a deep oily, buttery style that experiences full malolactic fermentation and great amounts of oak. This style has since fallen out of favour and wine makers in the Yarra Valley have capitalized on this trend to produce leaner, acid driven Chardonnays that are closer in style to those from Burgundy.
