We love Riesling as a variety for multiple reasons but mostly for its purity, elegance and age-ability. We whole-heatedly believe that our old block vines (which are 41 years old this vintage), combined with the growing conditions and climate here in Marlborough, are capable of making world class Riesling. The original Riesling vines on our home block here at the winery were planted in 1979 and are the oldest Riesling vines in Marlborough. Part of the reason for our conversion to organic and biodynamic farming was to rescue these old vines and coax them back to life. We saw huge potential in this old block and successfully rejuvenating them has been one of our greatest achievements. The fruit from these old vines has great fruit concentration and structure as well as great natural acidity that lends itself very well to making a dry style of Riesling.
All the grapes were hand-picked and hand sorted. The fruit was then destemmed, gently crushed, and air-bag pressed. Some parcels given skin contact time. All parcels were fermented in stainless steel tanks that were purpose built for Riesling. We like very slow, cool ferments for the Riesling to help retain all the great floral aromatics. This wine has not been fined and is suitable for vegans. The wine has gorgeous, lifted aromas of jasmine, fresh lemon, and ripe Kaffir lime which follow through on the palate. Flavours of fresh lime juice, lemon sorbet and ripe grapefruit with hints of floral spice are balanced by a fine backbone of ripe acidity. In a dry style, with excellent fruit weight and concentration to balance the lingering mineral acid structure. Finely structured with great length of flavour.– Anna Flowerday, TWR

Wines of Marlborough
Marlborough is at the northern tip of New Zealand’s South Island and is the leading region in the country, being responsible for 75% of NZ’s wine production and 85% of its exports. Marlborough is internationally renowned for its distinctive style of Sauvignon Blanc, described by some wine writers such as Oz Clarke and George Taber as the best in the world. Australia being such a close neighbour, we get a great number of brands imported into the country.
Sauvignon Blanc in Marlborough is grown on well-draining alluvial gravels, with large temperature fluctuations between day and night. These conditions are great for growing grapes that strike a perfect balance between ripeness and acidity. The result is sauvignon blanc that is aromatic, driven by tropical fruit flavours but also supported by an herbaceous and mineral character. Aussies often described Marlborough Savvy Blanc as full of passionfruit flavour.
Despite many consumers having an idea of what Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc is, the wine is actually made in a wide range of different styles. Wine makers take advantage of different clones, fermentation styles, lees-stirring and aging regimens to give their wines nuance and differentiate their brand from one another. You may have had sauvignon blanc from Marlborough before, but it is always worth exploring some not so commercial brands if it is a style you enjoy.
Other varieties that are produced in the region include Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris.
