About this Wine

Vignavecchia di San Polo faces west, perched on a hill of rare beauty particularly rich in Galestro soil, where biodiversity reigns supreme. With the utmost respect for nature’s rhythms, the Brunello Icona di San Polo is born here from 30-year-old vines with deep root systems. The wine shows an intense ruby red color. On the nose, it offers aromas of ripe red fruits, floral notes of violet, and hints of underbrush, rounded out by pleasant touches of aromatic wood. On the palate, it is warm, with a dense texture, persistent finish, and remarkable verticality. Thanks to the unique characteristics of the soil from which it originates, the Brunello Vignavecchia di San Polo can withstand long aging and continues to improve in the bottle.

Vintage Characteristics:
This was one of the best vintages of the past twenty years. The entire vegetative cycle of the vine unfolded under excellent climatic conditions. A winter marked by abundant rain and cold temperatures was followed by a dry spring with slightly above-average temperatures, which allowed for uniform budburst and ideal flowering. The summer saw few but significant rainfalls, enabling sustainable and environmentally friendly vineyard management. Sunny, warm days with excellent diurnal temperature variation brought the grapes to ideal ripeness by late September: perfectly healthy berries with high acidity, despite their elevated sugar levels. The Sangiovese harvest, which concluded by the end of the month, delivered pristine grapes with thick skins—ideal for long maceration and wines with great aging potential.

Tasting Notes:
The wine presents an intense ruby red color. The nose reveals aromas of ripe red fruits, floral violet notes, and forest floor, complemented by pleasant hints of aromatic wood. On the palate, it is warm, densely structured, and persistent, with excellent verticality. Its origin in such distinctive soil allows this Brunello to endure long cellaring and evolve beautifully over time.

Food Pairings:
The wine’s elegance and harmonious structure make it a perfect match for robust dishes such as red meats and game—both feathered and furred—especially when accompanied by mushrooms or truffles. It also pairs wonderfully with aged cheeses like aged Tome, Parmigiano Reggiano, and Tuscan Pecorino. For best enjoyment, serve it at 16–18°C in large-bowled glasses to fully capture its complexity.

Wines of Tuscany

Tuscany, or Toscana in Italian, is one of the most iconic Italian regions for wine, scenery, and history. Located in central Italy along the west coast, its production of Sangiovese wines is world renowned. Some of Italy’s most famous subregions for Sangiovese such as Chianti, Brunello di Montalcino and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano can be found here.

Tuscany makes both simple and top tier, age worthy Sangiovese wines. At entry-level you have a wine that is pizza and pasta friendly with bright and juicy red fruit. On the other hand, the highest quality representations of Sangiovese are remarkably complex with flavours ranging from sour cherry, balsamic, dried herbs and leather to fresh earth, dried flowers, anise and tobacco.

In evidence of the quality produced, Tuscany produces the third highest volume of DOC and DOCG quality wines in Italy, only trailing Piedmont, and Veneto. DOC and DOCG wines are the highest designation for Italian wines, while you will often see the IGT classification used to represent wines from Toscana that do not reach the standards for DOC/G.

There is another unofficial class of Tuscan wines called Super Tuscans which also command high prices. These wines are often made from international wine varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Syrah, with or without Sangiovese.
