Description

Beautiful soft sweet aromas, hints of cream and caramel but not overpoweringly sweet on the palate. Sanchez Romate Cream Iberia Sherry is the 'real thing', not a commercially made cream Sherry, with wonderfully aged PX to give it the weight and depth.

Juan Sánchez de la Torre founded Sanchez Romate in 1781 in Jerez to produce fine wines. More than two centuries later Sánchez Romate is one of the oldest bodegas in Spain and one of the few that remains in family hands. This has allowed the company to maintain its independence and continue making wines in the same time-honoured tradition. Over the years their quality has been rewarded with appointments to the House of Lords and the Vatican.

To ensure quality from vineyard to bottle Sánchez Romate not only owns its own vineyards (in the best albariza soil areas of Jerez) but has also invested in some of the most modern facilities in the region, all of which are still housed in the bodega buildings located in central Jerez. These traditional cellars with their high ceilings keep temperatures stable and allow the natural yeasts to circulate while the sand floors keep the humidity at the correct levels.

The ageing process is through traditional criaderas y soleras with 500 litre American oak casks filled to five-sixths and arranged in layers of three to four. The company produces three different ranges of sherry, from the classic Romate range to the Reservas Especiales through to La Sacristía (the company's oenological treasures).

Wines of Spain

With 2.9 million acres of land planted in wine grapes, Spain is the most widely planted wine producing nation and second largest producer in the world. Many styles of wine are produced in the country most of which are based on native grape varietals.

The two most famous regions are Rioja and Ribera del Duero for their Tempranillo production. Rioja Tempranillo (the classic) will be lighter and fresher with red fruit flavours as compared to those from Ribera del Duero that are often deep purple, higher in alcohol with more tannins and intense black fruit character. Rioja is also known for producing Garnacha (Grenache), as well as rich, nutty whites from the indigenous Viura varietal.

In the Catalonia region, Spain is recognized for making a sparkling wine in the traditional method but using native grape varieties. This is called Cava. Priorat, a subregion within Catalonia specializes in making still red blends of Garnacha, Carignan and often Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon in a bold and full-bodied style. Together with Rioja, wines from Priorat have achieved DOCa/DOQ status signifying their quality.

Sherry is Spain’s famous fortified wine which can either be completely dry, lusciously sweet or somewhere in between. This is made in the southern region of Jerez.

Other notable Spanish wine styles include: Monastrell (AKA. Mataro/Mourvèdre), produced in the Jumilla region and refreshing white Albariño and Verdejo from north western Galacia.
