Critic reviews

James Halliday – “Chardonnay from Meadowbank's south-facing Far Horse vineyard; five years on tirage. Made by Peter Dredge. Pale straw with a fine, energetic bead and aromas of grapefruit, green apple, lemon barley, crushed stone and white flowers plus marzipan and brioche notes. Nashi pear and some light, soft spice flow in on the palate, which shows fine, saline acidity and some nice tension and detail before fading off with gently spiced grapefruit and peach." - Dave Brookes, Halliday Wine Companion 2024

Description

2017 marks the second release of Meadowbank’s Blanc de Blancs, a more than worthy follow-up to the excellent 2016. The source site remains the same; the Far Horse Vineyard block lies close to vines used for the Meadowbank Chardonnay. While the latter vines are exposed north, the Blanc de Blancs parcel faces south in a slightly cooler microclimate and the clone is I10V1.

2017 was a cooler year than 2016, a long and moderate season that turned out some amazingly pure Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The fruit was hand-picked, whole-cluster-pressed and just the first two-thirds were taken for fermentation in old barriques for three months—Peter Dredge also washed one new barrel with the sparkling base in 2017. The wine spent five years in bottle before release and was dosed with a low, four grams per litre when disgorged earlier in 2023.

Tasmanian Wine

The Tasmanian wine region is a cool climate region, the most southerly of all wine regions in Australia. Due to the lower temperatures, the area grows primarily Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc, with smaller plantings of Riesling, Pinot Gris and Cabernet Sauvignon.

“Having been to many wine tastings over the years, I can definitely say from a personal standpoint that Tasmanian Chardonnay and Pinot noir are always ones I look forward to trying if they are on the menu. They are almost always high calibre wines that can easily compete against what the rest of the world has to offer in these varietals.” Jason C. – World Wine.

While Tasmania makes great still wines, the exceptional Chardonnay and Pinot Noir also make for excellent sparkling wines.

More recent vintages since 2005 have been positively impacted by the effects of global warming. With slightly higher temperatures the grapes are ensured to ripen fully and produce more vibrant wine.
