Malvasia Istriana is a truly rare gem in the Australian wine landscape. It's roots lie in the Istrian Peninsula and has been producing high quality wine in Italy, Slovenia and Croatia for centuries. In Australia there are less than 10 producers tackling this varietal. Anita Goode at Wangolina is one of these. Her strong opinion is that this variety requires cool nights, sun-drenched days and a heavy coastal influence. Her incredible vineyard in Mount Benson offers all of these in spades. Whilst the variety is inherently floral with notes of stone fruit and citrus, the heavy marine influence of the vineyard brings this variety much closer to something like high quality Chablis, with oyster shell, salinity and a beautifully lengthy palate.
