Bob Campbell MW – 97 Points
"My first taste revealed a wine of great intensity and flavours that suggested cacao nibs, mocha, dark cherry, cassis, black-fleshed plum in centre-stage with an undercurrent of assorted spices, and floral/deep red rose petals flavours. An heroic pinot noir that, while carrying the Block 3 signature, has greater structure than usual. I put it to the test by tasting the wine over three days. While deliciously accessible when first opened it retained its appeal until the end of day three."
The first encounter tells you it could only be Block 3. Characteristic spice and herbs, dark cherry, leather and mocha. The superb 2024 vintage shows the place clearer than ever, delivered in a wine that’s poised as well as profound. Cascades of deep dark fruit on the palate build to reveal real authority rather than just weight. The tannins are waiting, providing a framework for the depth of fruit, then ultimately giving a sustained, indulgent finish. An emphatically opulent Block 3 with the potential to be benchmark.

Central Otago Wines

Central Otago is a unique wine region for New Zealand as it does not grow any of the country's famous Sauvignon Blanc but also unique globally for being the most southerly commercial wine region in the world. The region is famous for its fruity and full-bodied Pinot Noir with about ¾ of all vineyards in the region growing this grape variety. One of our favourite Pinot Noir regions here at World Wine.
Central Otago is the only region in New Zealand with a truly continental climate, with large daily and seasonal temperature extremes. At 300m in elevation, vineyards are protected from the cold ocean winds by high mountains reaching 3700m. The soils are also different to the rest of the country, with heavy deposits of rough-edged mica and other metamorphic schists in silt loams.
Historically, the subregion of Bannockburn has seen the most success. However, the region has seen significant growth in recent years and other sub regions are also flourishing.

James Suckling – Aromas of ripe strawberries, plums and granite with a mineral undertone. It’s tannic with chewy tannins and a crushed character. Smoky, too. From organically grown grapes. Needs a few more years of bottle age to soften, but it’s already impressive.
