Frankland Estate 'Olmo's Reward' 2015
Cabernet Franc (66%), Malbec (27%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (11%). All three varieties used in the blend were dry-grown on mature vines in the Isolation Ridge Vineyard at Frankland Estate. The vineyard sits on an undulating northern and eastern facing slope on ancient duplex soils of gravel and loam over a clay sub-soil. It is farmed using organic viticultural practices (certified organic in 2010) and this is reflected in the depth and concentration of fruit flavours. The vines are trained on a combination of Scott Henry Trellis system and vertical shoot attention to detail during the growing season encourages flavour development and promotes balance in the wine. Each variety was fermented separately as slowly as possible at temperatures not exceeding 27°C. Open fermentation tanks facilitated working the cap with gentle plunging and pumping over. After fermentation, an extended maceration period allowed desired colour, flavour and tannin extraction. The component wines were blended on completion of the malolactic fermentation and then aged in French oak for 15 months. Deep crimson red with purple hues. The nose shows vanilla, plum, currants and cherry. In the mouth it's fresh and bright, showing freshness and bright sweet fruit, red-berries, plum and lifted floral notes. The tightly woven palate has fine grained gravelly tannins, slight mocha and savoury earthy notes. The palate is flavoursome and persistent.

The Wine Front – Single vineyard blend of cabernet franc, malbec and a touch of cabernet sauvignon. The Frankland Estate reds are in excellent shape; perhaps the best shape I’ve seen them in. This wine is looking the goods too. Grassy, herb and nut-like notes are washed through with cherry-plum and musk. Complex and come-hither at once. Flying.
James Halliday – The finest, most complete Olmo's Reward to date comprising cabernet franc 58% /cabernet sauvignon 26%/malbec 11%/petit verdot 5%. Red fruits, earth and spice sashay across the medium-bodied frame meeting finely crafted tannins. Pure and long on the finish and seems effortless. Certainly effortless to drink. 96 points.
