About this Wine

This wine is entirely produced from the Greek grape variety of Malagousia that was saved from extinction due to the efforts of Vangelis Gerovassiliou. Further to skin contact to enhance the extraction of aromas, it is partially barrel-fermented and then matures on its lees for a few months, gaining depth in flavor and floral aromas. It has a brilliant straw color with greenish shades and an aroma of matured fruit such as pear, mango and citrus. On the palate the rich flavors of lemon peel enhance the appealing mouthfeel, adding a well-balanced finish.

About Greek Wines

Greece is a country with a long and rich wine history, it is said that the origins of winemaking here date back 6,500 years. Between the mainland and the country’s numerous islands, many wine styles exist, made mostly from one of Greece’s 300 indigenous grape varieties.

During the 1960’s, Retsina became the national beverage and was associated with Greece and Greek wine worldwide. Retsina is a white or rose wine that derives part of its flavour from pine resin. A storage method from ancient times, pine resin was used to seal wine vessels, keeping air out and infusing the wine with resin aroma. The traditional grape for Retsina is Savatiano with Assyrtiko and Rhoditis sometimes blended in.

Assyrtiko is one of the most popular Greek white grape varieties. From the island of Santorini with volcanic soils, it does not lose its acidity as it ripens. It is sometimes compared to Riesling but with a saline character.

Notable red varieties from Greece include full bodied and fruity Agiorghitiko, Macedonia’s savory and tannic Xinomavro, and Mavrodaphne, used commonly to produce fortified wine in the Peloponnese.

Critic reviews

Decanter – There’s nothing like Santorini Assyrtico – but there’s nothing like Malagousia from Greek Macedonia’s Epanomi, either. At first sniff, you might think it’s a member of the Muscat family. Keep sniffing and it might put you in mind of both Viognier and Albariño: it has both a visceral, honeycream charm as well as fluttering with rose petal and freesia floral notes, too. Nor does it disappoint on the palate: all of that aromatic richness is there, built into a whole in which you can find both brisk, apple-fresh acidity and the soft, cleansing bitter notes of dried herbs and grapefruit. It’s quite a performer, as you see, and a sure-fire conversation wine for serving with or without food. If you or your wine friends have never tried it, seek this wine out: it will expand your horizons. (Best in Show)
