Gibson The Smithy Shiraz Cabernet 2023

A tin-roofed, mud and straw-walled cottage sits at the centre of Gibson’s 5-acre vineyard in Light Pass. It was the original home of the local Blacksmith and his family, thought to date back to the 1850s. An enchanting artefact of the Barossa’s early European settlers, we know it simply as ‘The Smithy’. This red wine, like The Smithy cottage itself, is full of character and unassuming charm. The quintessential Australian blend of Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon, the elements of The Smithy come together seamlessly.

The 2023 growing season featured above average winter rains followed by a perfectly mild, fine, dry harvest period. Temperatures were milder than average with few hot days. Ripening was slow, enabling good retention of fine varietal flavours.

A vivid crimson edged with violet. Aromas leap from the glass—blackberry, blue fruit and succulent satsuma plum, layered with hints of dried herbs. The palate is supple yet powerful, unfolding dark fruits in a smooth, unbroken line. Silky but persistent tannins draw the wine to a poised, harmonious finish.
