The Wine Front – Flaxman Valley, planted around 1965, sitting at 450 metres above sea level. Heady seems to be seeking higher altitudes for his wines in recent years. Blackberry, liquorice, orange peel, dark spices. It’s dark fruited, but with a chocolate orange zestiness, lively acid crunch, almost a chamomile and dried herb mouth-perfume, raw almond, some dry nutty chew to tannin, with a dark, spicy and zesty XMAS cake (or panforte) finish of good length. 93 POINTS - The Real Review, Aaron Brasher
"Dark, inky and opaque in appearance. Heady aromas of mulberry, plum conserve, graphite, ferrous earth and sweet spice. Opulent and inviting. The palate is plush and full bodied with plenty of plum, blackberry, prune, spice and pudding flavours. The tannins are soft and caressing and the acidity does its thing to deliver cut and freshness. A stylish wine."

Head Wines now works with a diverse range of up to 20 different shiraz vineyards in the Barossa and Eden Valleys. To be considered part of ‘The Brunette’ a vineyard must perform amongst the few top vineyards each year and represent the ‘dark-side’ of Shiraz in the Barossa. In the vineyard, we give every opportunity for the fruit to provide us with the tannins and concentration to make a structured and long-lived traditional Barossa Shiraz. In the 2021 vintage, the base shiraz comes from a vineyard planted circa 1965, in the Flaxman Valley at 480m altitude. The vineyard has a perfect easterly aspect and gradient to catch the morning sun and is shaded from the late heat of the day. The soils are lean, with clays, mixed ironstone and some scattered quartz, producing optimum conditions for dark, savoury fruits and fine, structured tannins.

Barossa Valley Wine
The Barossa Valley wine region has historically and currently still is one of Australia's most prestigious premium wine producing regions. Located just 60km north east of Adelaide city centre, the climate there is very hot and dry which is perfect for the big bold reds the area is famous for.
A straight Shiraz is what Barossa is most well known for, however Rhone blends, such as Shiraz Cabernet are also very popular. While much less prevalent, white wines (Chardonnay, Riesling, Semillon) are planted on the higher altitude hillsides where the ocean breeze cools temperatures down to a level suitable for producing these varieties as well.
Some of Australia's earliest Shiraz plantings can be found here dating as far back as the 1850's. While not always a guarantee of quality, it might be worth seeking out and trying one of the region's "old vine shiraz" if you haven't yet.
