About this Wine

The village of Krondorf was established in the Barossa in 1847 by a small group of Silesian settlers seeking a better life. They found it in the small hamlet they named Krondorf (German for Crown Village). One of the first things they did was plant vines, which grew among their produce, orchards and livestock. In the 1970s the Krondorf label was officially created, and our wines began to flourish. A group of young winemakers, led initially by Grant Burge, made their names by crafting bold, highly acclaimed wines. Their greatest achievement came in 1980, when the Krondorf Cabernet Sauvignon 1979 won the prestigious Jimmy Watson Memorial Trophy at the Royal Melbourne Wine Awards. Since then, Krondorf has continued to produce award-winning and highly acclaimed wines, many of which are limited in production and distribution. Today, with our label under the stewardship of our experienced and passionate winemaker Nick Badrice, we’re continuing to honour the Krondorf tradition by crafting wines with love and faith.

Barossa Valley Wine

The Barossa Valley wine region has historically and currently still is one of Australia's most prestigious premium wine producing regions. Located just 60km north east of Adelaide city centre, the climate there is very hot and dry which is perfect for the big bold reds the area is famous for.

A straight Shiraz is what Barossa is most well known for, however Rhone blends, such as Shiraz Cabernet are also very popular. While much less prevalent, white wines (Chardonnay, Riesling, Semillon) are planted on the higher altitude hillsides where the ocean breeze cools temperatures down to a level suitable for producing these varieties as well.

Some of Australia's earliest Shiraz plantings can be found here dating as far back as the 1850's. While not always a guarantee of quality, it might be worth seeking out and trying one of the region's "old vine shiraz" if you haven't yet.
