Critic reviews

James Halliday – The second release of this wine sees more depth and texture, reflecting an evolution of making after winemaker Adam Wadewitz got the measure of grape and site – on Maslin sands over ironstone. There’s chew and race in equal measure, with tart golden apples, ripe Meyer lemon, cool stone fruit, sea spray and savoury elements of crushed fennel seed, white pepper and a waxy chalkiness. Integrated barrel/mlf notes round out flavour and feel, with an intriguing saline slip to the palate complementing the subtle grip and the pleasing rip of natural acid. It’s a superb wine, thrillingly refined and detailed. The upward trajectory of this project is one to watch very closely. - Marcus Ellis, 28 February 2024

World Wine

Decanter – Lemon meringue pie-like with its notes of salted pastry, lemon curd and a line of savoury quartz-like minerality. Inviting and plush on the palate – as plush as Chenin can get. The mouth-puckering acidity is lively and malleable, pushing through the grippy texture and juicy weight of the lemon pith and preserved lemon flavours. A delightful, supple shape on the palate: exciting tension that underpins beautiful glossy fruit. Phenolics are rotund and polished and hold their ground; there’s a width to this wine, not simply a curvy rush of acid to the finish line. Winemaking (50% crushed in amphora and 50% whole bunch in old oak) is well judged.- Cassandra Charlick, 29 March 2024

Description

96 POINTS - Wine Pilot
"50% of the pickings were crushed and fermented to concrete and 50% was whole-bunch pressed and fermented in large-format seasoned oak. The Blewitt Springs vineyard was planted in 1939 and one does not often taste 80 year+ plus Chenin Blanc in Australia. As of 2022 the vineyard is solely in the management hands of the MMAD team. Flannel flowers, pomelo pith and pumice stone. White apple flesh, nectarine and lemon sorbet. It’s delicately floral with marine accents. Driftwood, salt spray and ozonic aromas. A white almond crunch with a briney salinity, the wine coils and stretches along the palate. The interplay of acidity, fine lacey phenolics and great length of flavour is becoming a trademark of style for this wine. Beautifully positioned for drinking with delicate raw seafood. Drink now and will cellar upwards of 8 years. Omakase come AT me. 27 October 2023"

93 POINTS - The Real Review, Huon Hooke
"Bright, light yellow hue with a nutty bouquet that reflects some barrel work, combined with creamy, waxy, pastry-like nuances. The wine is bright and intense in the mouth, restrained and quietly persuasive, with a bone-dry balance and refreshing qualities. There's a lot to like here. September 2023"

"From the second vintage for the MMAD team, the wetter 2022 season was a blessing, it meant excellent soil moisture going into summer, resulting in a flourishing of cover crops - providing necessary nourishment to beneficial bugs. Come Spring, there was perfect flowering, with an average of 24°C and no surprises leading up to harvest. Overall the vintage was hallmarked with low yields and a cool to mild summer providing notable intensity, freshness and depth across the range.

Easy to wax lyrical about this one. All hand picked 50% into concrete, the rest is whole bunch pressed into large old oak. Frangipanni florals, that flinty wet stone effect, zingy acid, and a waxy feel. Fruit wise, there's citrus peel, cumquat, hessian, and plenty sea spray. The palate is long and framed by crisp acidity, with exciting ageing potential."
