James Halliday – The second release of this wine sees more depth and texture, reflecting an evolution of making after winemaker Adam Wadewitz got the measure of grape and site – on Maslin sands over ironstone. There’s chew and race in equal measure, with tart golden apples, ripe Meyer lemon, cool stone fruit, sea spray and savoury elements of crushed fennel seed, white pepper and a waxy chalkiness. Integrated barrel/mlf notes round out flavour and feel, with an intriguing saline slip to the palate complementing the subtle grip and the pleasing rip of natural acid. It’s a superb wine, thrillingly refined and detailed. The upward trajectory of this project is one to watch very closely. - Marcus Ellis, 28 February 2024
World Wine –
Decanter – Lemon meringue pie-like with its notes of salted pastry, lemon curd and a line of savoury quartz-like minerality. Inviting and plush on the palate – as plush as Chenin can get. The mouth-puckering acidity is lively and malleable, pushing through the grippy texture and juicy weight of the lemon pith and preserved lemon flavours. A delightful, supple shape on the palate: exciting tension that underpins beautiful glossy fruit. Phenolics are rotund and polished and hold their ground; there’s a width to this wine, not simply a curvy rush of acid to the finish line. Winemaking (50% crushed in amphora and 50% whole bunch in old oak) is well judged.- Cassandra Charlick, 29 March 2024

A late and cool growing season gave us smaller, more flavourful bunches and lifted aromatics. There is a richness and density of fruit on the mid-palate that reflects another year of our farming the vineyard, and lower yields. We are starting to uncover the full potential of these old vines. A mix of crushed and whole bunch pressed fruit was fermented in both concrete and large format old oak bring texture to the wine. The textured palate is balanced with a mineral, saline edge and long, pithy finish.
